This is my first post on these forums so forgive me if this is in the wrong section of the forums.

I am running Vista Business 32 bit with 2.5 GB of RAM

In the past I was able to use the built in Restore wizard to backup an image of my entire PC to DVD

Ever since I installed Roxio 9 however this no longer works. I stick the DVD in and it states "Disk is not UDF" (or something to that effect). Since this worked previously this must be due to the Roxio install. I tried uninstalling Roxio and deleting the entries from the registry in order to get the back up functionality working but it still does not work. I have since reinstalled Roxio 9 and tried again ... still no go. This isn't a huge deal as it took 12 DVDs to burn a full system image so I will probably just burn to an external hard drive from now on in the future. But if anyone knows an answer to this I would certainly like to know the solution.

But the next issue IS an annoyance.

I can burn to to a CD / DVD just fine. I looked up in the instructions for burning to Lightscribe discs and it says to create a label in the labeler function and then go to File / Print and select the burner drive as the 'printer'. That seems a bit odd to me but ok. But when I go to burn a Lightscribe label my DVD burner is not recognized in the list of available 'printer' devices. And yes I am using Lightscribe media and it's flipped the right way.

Thoughts?

Have you installed the LightScribe software/driver, from the LightScribe website? Without that installed, the LightScribe burner won't work with any software.

Mixed success. Now the drive shows up in the list of available drives and I am able to burn to the CD. But ... I am only able to burn to a small sliver of the CD. There is a small ring about 1/4" wide running around the middle of the disk and that tiny area is the only area where any portion of a background image or text will burn. Anything placed outside of that ring doesn't get burned. I can't resize this ring and all other options like the font tool or anything else are greyed out and un-available. What else is not set right??

That's because the only Lightscribe template is a text template. Use any other REGULAR template, then make the changes you want to that, and burn it to the LightScribe disc.

I tried again. It was still defaulting to the DVD-RW as the print device and showing the Lightscribe template (the one with the narrow band in the middle of the design). I switched the printer to my injet and started a new project and the narrow band disappeared and I was able to add an image and text and saved it. Then, per the directions, selected File / Print and selected the DVD-RW drive and when the print preview pulled up, once again it was only printing the part of the image that was inside the narrow band running through the middle of the ring.

Some of the Lightscribe templates only burn to a small ring around the middle of the disc.Make sure you're not using one of them.

It does not appear to matter how I begin the project. I can create a project and set the disc up just fine. But the moment I click on File / Print and select my DVD-RW as the 'printer' so that it knows it is going to be lightscribed it then immediately adds that ring in the middle of the disc, the entire disc background I created looks washed out except for the part of the image that is inside that ring (which cannot be deleted) and all of the features for editing the project are greyed out (add an image, add text tool, etc).

Perhaps we need to take a step back and just start from the beginning and walk through step by step. Maybe it is something that's not being done during initial creation process?

You got that right!!!

When you start a new project and select Disc, it looks like this:

Now you need to select a Style, any style since we are going to delete all of anyway!

Attached Image: monthly_02_2008/post-39730-1202419214.jpg

After clearing it, Save As, Blank Disc.jwl. If your smart, you will set that file to Read Only so you don't wreck it later on.

Now with your Blank Disc.jwl, you can add whatever you want and burn away!!!

There are other LightScribe tips under Tips & Tricks.
