My DVD set top is a Samsung Model No. DVD-V5500.
I have the same player. We have infinite problems with assorted dvd's- menus that don't work, widescreen that is the wrong size or full screen, options that don't work when using it on the disk, movies that won't play at all etc. The problem is the player isn't very good. I was just looking on the web for some kind of firmware upgrade for this and found this forum. I haven't seen a firmware for this player yet. What we are forced to do is play the movies that this player won't run on the PS 2 which will run everything and before we figured that out we would play them perfectly just fine. This isn't just backups this is often the original movie.
This probably didn't help but when it comes to this model I am pretty underwhelmed and will definately not be looking at getting this brand of dvd player again.

I may be wrong but I don't think you can apply any firmware update to a stand-alone DVD player

There are some newer players that can be upgraded this way. You download the ISO from the manufacturer's website, burn it and hope it doesn't mess up. ; ) I am convinced that I cannot do that with this model unless someone else can get me a link to it. : /

My old Philips DVP-640K takes firmware upgrades nicely, as do a lot of Philips players.
You d/l the firmware and put it on a CD or DVD R or RW and then pop it in the drawer. The player recognizes the files and starts to update itself. When it finishes you have to pull the power plug for 15 seconds and then restart the player.
All I need now is some way to persuade Philips to put out an update for my machine from DivX 5 to DivX 6.
