I've got my own video as an overlay on another video, but is there any way of making the overlay semi-transparent, so as to see both at once on top of eachother

Highlight the overlay, then click Show Settings under the Tools area on the left pane. Click the second tab, and adjust the slider of the Transparency option to what you want it to be.
