Creating A Dvd To Play Widescreen On A 16x9 And Letterbox On A 4x3 Tv's

Wonder if anyone can shed some light on creating a DVD that plays widescreen on a 16X9 TV's and will play in letterbox or 4X3 crop on older 4X3 TV's. I downconverted a HD program to NTSC 16X9 and it looks and plays great on a HD 16X9 TV but when I play it on a 4X3 TV the program is squizzed from 16X9 to 4X3, not letterboxed or 4X3 crop. Is there a setting I am missing?

sounds like your settings are incorrect on your DVD player.

I don't know what editing software you're using but sometimes in your editor, when you render/encode your movie file there is a setting for 16:9 (Letter Box/Crop) or something to that effect. You may want to check that out.
