Hi,

I have burnt a few DVD movies so far with MyDVD, and every time I use "fit to disc" option, MyDVD reduces the size WAY TOO MUCH, which results in really bad quality video.
For example, when I check "fit to disc," it will display that it is going to burn at 4.65 GB. So, I click burn. But, when I check the size of the end product, it says it is only 3.6 GB, and the video quality is reduced waaaaaaaaay too much. Is this a known error in MyDVD? Is there a work around for this? Please help!

Edit: I just tried "create dvd from divx" within EMC10 to burn the same movie. The same thing happened even though it was a little better this time. It originally said it was going to be 4.4 GB, but the end product was only 4 GB. So, I guess it's not just MyDVD.

I really want to burn movies to the fullest capacity instead of reducing its quality too much and leaving space on a disc wasted. These are 4.7 GB discs. I don't want EMC10 to shrink movies too much and make crappy movies when the discs do have enough space to handle quality movies.

GT

Movies are measured in time as a result, file sizes are a useless measure…

A 4.7gb disc can hold about 1 hour of DVD Movie at Best Quality. Anything longer and quality is sacrificed for time.

MyDVD tends to work in 'chunks' and the best workaround has been in use since V7.

Don't Burn a disc in MyDVD!!! Instead, Burn to File (iso) or to Folder. Write down the location of the destination so you can find it later.

Then use Copy & Convert to do the actual burning. For some reason it has a better compression algorithm and will reduce the encoding rate just enough to allow it to fit onto the disc.

In addition to what James posted, use HQ (High Quality) for your setting, when you are burning to an imge file or Folder set.  Don't use Fit To Disc.

If you can burn dual layer DVDs you should try that as an option.  The media costs more but there is a better chance that compression will not come into play.  A commerical produced DVD will fit on a DVD DL without compression in most cases just to give you a reference for the length of the video.  On standard DVDs, one hour or so of standard non-HD video should fit with little compression.

The Sunday newspaper for th local "OFFICE" store had blank DVD DLs at $.84 and DVDs at $.24.  Not close to 10:1 here in the US.  There are probably better deals to be found on the internet.

Dave, which brand were they?  At that price, I think I might be concerned about the quality.
