Hi
Apologies if this has been covered in a different thread - I had a quick look but couldn't see anything
I'm trying to burn AVI files to a DVD +R disc, to play in my standalone DVD player through the TV
The burn seems to be ok, but I get disc error when I try to play this in my DVD player. I thought this could have been due to the disc not finalising properly - so I put it back into the computer and tried to finalise the disc using MyDVD - but it rejected the disc saying it needed to be an appendable ® disc - which I thought mine was.
A different thread seemed to suggest burning to image first, then to disc. I haven't tried this yet - do you think it might help
Thanks

Problems Finalising Disc

Actually one of the advantages of 'plus' media is that it does not need Finalized… In any case MyDVD always Finalizes a DVD Movie (unless a DVD+VR project was selected.
If the DVD plays on your PC, it is fine and indicates a Player compatibility issue.
In that case quality media, like Verbatim will clear it up. Sometimes it does take a switch in media type… You were using 'plus' so try 'dash'.
Before buying a mass of media, I would get a disc or two of RW in 'plus' and 'dash' to play with.

Ok, will give it a go. I am currently using Philips DVDs - they are a well known brand so I assumed they would be ok. Are they not?

Most all files have to be re-encoded into a compliant DVD Video format. Then Authored in the correct DVD Structure, like what Jim explained MyDVD does.

I don't subscribe to this belief! Some media players on a PC can play anything like a Vob file on a data disc. Just to many variables to make such a blanket statement, it gets repeated here often, kinda like a commandment!
Open the Home page for your Roxio EMC 10 Suite, click more on the left side of the screen, then tools, disc information. Place this disc in a drive and make sure that drive is selected at the bottom of the screen. Under Disc Type what does it read? If it does not read closed DVD Video, we have a non compliant DVD Video disc, most players won't touch!
Except Brendon but that's another story and he lives far South + East and has a very special player.

That is correct so we won't apply to have it christened The 11th Commandment
I will try to remember to precede it with 'generally' in the future.
I agree on Brendon's hardware, odd stuff it is!

Hi Jed,
Please ignore folks with outdated hardware who say it can't be done
When cdanteek says "most players won't touch" he should be referring to most old players.
Having said that, my Philips DVP640 is over 4 years old already, and handles the formats you'll see below. My el-cheapo $40 set is not certified, but handles even more formats plus it has a USB 2.0 port for pendrive or USB hard drives.
The first thing to check is that your set-top player can play AVIs. Most modern sets can. There's a huge list of players which definitely can, on the DivX certified list (click here to see) but they are not the only players which can do this, they're just those who have bothered to get DivX certification. Check your player's manual for a list of formats it can handle. There should be something like this:

If there is no mention of playing anything else but video DVDs and Audio CDs then your player probably won't handle them. If it won't, don't bother to read any further.
Once you've found that the player can play AVIs you might be faced with other quirks of your particular player. From here on it's a matter of experimenting. Try both DVD+ and DVD- discs, rewriteables, or even a CD. It might not like DVD+ discs, or perhaps DVD- , or rewriteable discs. My old machine will see all AVIs or MPG or subtitle files on multi-session rewriteable discs, but will only see the first session on write-once multi-session discs. It doesn't mind if the disc is finalized or not, but I'm told some players do.
Go well,
Brendon
