I just added a Seagate 500 GB (USB) drive to my system. All the files that I'm using for my video are on that drive plus I'm writing the ISO back to it also. I'm using MyDVD.
The burn proceeds normally for sometimes several hours and then I get and an error message,
(which doesn't appear to originate with Roxio). It's down in the right corner (taskbar?) and only remains for a few seconds and I don't have time to copy it. It says "cannot write to Drive K - this data is lost try to save elsewhere". "MyDVD" freezes but I can end it from the task manager. Drive K is not accessable. When I attempt to remove Drive K prior to shutting down the system crashes.

Things I have done:
Returned the drive - the second one does the same.
Tried a smaller file and a smaller(40GB) Drive also USB (Drive J). The same thing happens but it still says Drive K.
Microsoft response to error message is "This error appears to have been caused by Virus removal software."
I have McAffee. I always shut it off and disconnect from the internet before burning a disk.

Appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

A trick to read those flash messages – press the Pause/Break key! It will 'freeze' the screen so you can finish reading the message.

I am assuming the drive is formatted NTFS? If you have any files on it that are greater than 4gb, it is!

Clearly there is something wrong with the PC/Drive. I am assuming your drive doesn't offer a Firewire connection? Firewire devices always work whereas USB has been a disappointment from day one.

My guess would be that there is a driver missing from the PC. You may need to go into the Device Manager (Win-Pause, Hardware tab) and delete the drive and reboot.

Before you do that, review the proper install procedure for that specific USB Device! The usually require their Drivers installed before they are attached to the PC.

The Anti Virus connection could be an indication that the AV Software is removing a needed Key in Registry. If you software has something like a 1 button Reg Cleaner, don't use it and see if things remain stable.

Thanks for the tip on pausing the flash messages.

The drive is fromatted NFTS and does have Firewire support, but it invloves physically changing the interface. Looks easy enough to do but before I do that ----- this morining I had an email from Seagate advising me to download the lastest version of the drive software. Release date was 3 days ago. Hmmmm.... perhaps I'm not the only one having this problem. I have done that but won't be able to test it until later today when I'll be trying again on the burn.
Many thanks to you and all the experts that are so giving of your time.

Hope this reaches you. I thought that I had the Seagate Drive problem resolved but within a day it started again.
The Seagate people don't seem too anxious to help. FYI - this is what I think is happening. The drive has a sleep option and one choice is never go to sleep. I had that option selelcted but I don't think it functions properly.
The video I'm currrently making takes several hours to encode the production in preparation to writing the ISO file. The error always occures at the end of the encoding and the indications are that it had completed. I suspect the the drive is asleep or unable to respond to the write command and everything freezes. The net result is a fatal error.
The drive works OK using drag and drop to copy the files. There are no activity indicatores on it (although the documantation says there are). I have noticed a distinct delay when I copy a file after an idle period. I can hear the drive spin up. I'm curious if anyone else is using this drive.

I hope I'm allowed to ask another quesion here. Now that the drive is gone I can comlete the encoding and write the ISO file. When the DVD is burned the menu is not displayed. It is simply a serial presentation. It always begins with the first video and progresses serially through the production. The audio and video are perfect.
I always preview the entire production before burning and in the preview the menu works perfectly. It's very simple. A main menu with four buttons. The videos were done with VideoWave and added to MyDVD 8. (I'm using EMC8)
I happened to be watching today and saw the menu as it was encoded. The Main Menu looked normal and all the buttions were there. When I checked the ISO file I found a second file there with a .001 extension. (87.2 MB) The file properties say it can be opened with MyDVD but it can't.

I started over and built the MyDVD project several times. Same results.
In order to save time I didn't include the 47:05 movie and there was no extra file produced with the ISO file. I burned the DVD and the menu worked perfect.
Is it possible the menu is that extra file?

Here are the numbers:
Four videos totaling 24.9 GB. Times: 9:40, 26:55, 33:30, 47:05.
ISO File = 4,194,272 GB, the extra file = 87.2 MB.

Of course the drive is supposed to wake up when it is tickled by the system. Internal drives have always been better… Actually externals were OK until they started adding all of eazy backup garbage to them!

While your Production adds up to 1:57:10, your menus are probably exceeding the capacity of an ISO file for a 4.7gb disc, hence the smaller Overflow file.

Been years since I worked in V8 but I don't recall it making an overflow file. Thought that was limited to V6??? I was also thinking that Disc Copier should handle that without a hitch.

The lack of menus may have nothing to do with the files. It could be that your player is not happy with your media choice. Personally I use nothing but Verbatim now and have yet to see a problem from media. Haven't heard of it lately but some Players won't do 'dash' media where other won't do 'plus' media… Most today will do both, but some struggle with one type and not the other.

One other thing you can try is to output to Folder instead of ISO. Then use disc copier to burn from the Folder…

I had no idea that disk copier had those capabilities. Once again - thanks for your patience.
What a relief when I finally got it burned.
