I am trying to install AVG Antivirus v. 7.1 but am unable because of a warning of a conflict with an older version of Roxio CD and DVD Creator.  AVG recommends visiting the Roxio site for an engine update.

I do not have a stand-alone version of Roxio installed on my machine, only the applet that was installed with Windows Media Player 9.  I cannot find an engine update on the Roxio site that does not require registration and that's not possible since I have nothing to register.

Microsoft's Knowledge Base is of no help; it has a link to Roxio's update page, but the link takes me to a purchase page for a new version of Roxio.

Can anyone help?  My need is sort of urgent since I uninstalled my previous antivirus and now have no protection.

WMP doesn't have anything Roxio in it…

Post back with text of the actual error message.

But that still doesn't solve my problem.  How can I get the engine update?  I believe the applet is from Roxio CD-DVD creator 6.x.

What OS are you using?

I will do some checking.

Actually, that does make some sense because Windows used Roxio for burning CDs.

While James is checking, I'd suggest that you make certain you have all the updates for Windows and your CD burner (from the manufacturer's website) installed.

But only as a plug-in for non-XP OS's!!!

The MSKB is OS specific and this is not something that one wants to add to XP.

My W2K installation is patched to SP4+, and CD drivers are up-to-date.  I have never burned a file from Media Player, instead using the HP S/W that was supplied with the drive.

While installing AVG on my wife's W2K SP2, Media Player 9 machine today I encountered the same error.  Hers is a new OS installation within the past two years, is very lean, and has never had a Roxio product installed on it.

Which is why we think it is a problem with AVG, not Roxio.  Not much of a solution, tho.

I have not gotten any response but your last post along with Lynn's made me realize that we are probably chasing our tails on this.

Is this correct:

  1. You have had no problems to date with 2 systems.

  2. But when you install AVG it reports you have a problem.

If this is correct we are simply seeing an overactive response from some self-important software. Check their website as this is probably listed.

This was coming up about once a month on the old ECDC 5 boards - Patrick's response was, if you don't have it installed (V.6) it is probably a problem with AVG.

I have a similar but less urgent problem.  Since I couldn't update Norton 2002 any further, and they are offering Norton 2006 (which won't run on Win98 SE), I got a couple pieces of it from eBay.  The Norton 2005 Firewall is a bit bloated, but after some discussions (like forbidding it to auto-update), it's working well.  The Norton 2005 AV came Saturday, was installed, and despite a feaw discussions, it is hogging too much resource from my 400MHz processor.  My loyalty lies with the processor, not Norton.

One suggestion from Digital Guru D_DeweyWright is eTrust EZ-Antivirus ... google pulled up this -

I don't know if there are any qualifiers on the offer; but I plan to sleep on it first.

Note: I installed Norton AV 2005 1/7/06; I began to look for alternatives 1/8/06.  The Norton Firewall 2005 is blocking the ads that slowed surfing down, and its predicessor caught a lot of attempted trojans, so that's staying for now.

No problem.  AVG admits in the error message that v. 7.1 has conflicts with older versions of Roxio.  It is a known issue that they say can be cured with a Roxio engine update, and even provide in the error message a hyperlink to the Roxio page where the update is supposed to be located.  Except when you go to the page there's an advertisement to upgrade to Roxio v. 8.

Since my wife's machine does not have a CD burner, I went out on a limb this evening and used the roxizap utility to see if it would help.  It cured the problem and AVG allowed the installation without any further messages.  Media Player still functions as a player.

I'm really reluctant to do this to my machine because it is used for business purposes and I don't want to take a chance on screwing it up, so I'd like to find another solution.  That solution apparently is to update the Roxio applet in MP9, which brings me back to my original question: How can I get an engine update from Roxio?

Did you scroll down the page? That big ad is why some people with ad blockers have trouble getting to the page, and others complain the updates aren't there.

Try scrolling down.  Platinum updates are under there, and Basic updates are at the bottom.

You might try AVG Free edition and see what happens.It has a little less functionality than 7.1 but still does a good job.I run it and haven't had any problems.Then again I use XP with WMP10 installed.I do have a Windows 2000 machine at work though that I use it on and once again have had no troubles.

The problem, Terry, is that AVG Virus consideres Roxio products - at least V.5 and 6, to be a Virus.  It doesn't seem to matter whether they are installed or not, they are still a Virus.  We got about 1 a month of that on ECDC 5 on the old boards.

Roxio put out a fix file, UPDATECDR4_53_71.EXE which was 188,406 bytes, and I think this was to fix that problem.

I haven't been able to find that file available from the Roxio site when I had a look just before, but I do have a copy of it from about a year ago.  If you need, I can experiment on my Version 5 and see what that file does.

Until Brendon is back in - have you turned off any pop-up blockers? (it's a pop-up)  Have you turned off any ad filters? (it has the word promotion in it, if it's like other updates)  Some people report they need to turn off the firewall at least until it starts loading; others have found (with WinXP) the Windows Firewall was activated and they weren't aware of it before it blocked the download.  And others have reported success with alternate browsers, such as Firefox and Opera.
