I just installed Toast 9 last week, have had about 3% success rate encoding and/or multiplexing TiVo recordings onto disk images. I keep getting crashes, with lovely crash logs indicating memory corruption.
So far no help from customer support--I'm still somewhere in the early stages of their diagnostic script (try this next!), I believe.
Even material I've reencoded with VLC to 720x480 (should only need multiplexing, not reencoding) gets a crash out of Toast Titanium.
Is anybody able to actually use 9.0.2 to put TiVo recordings onto DVD?
Using an external firewire disk to store the recordings? (Boot drive isn't big enough.)

Yes, I've done it, but not with an external drive -- with the internal drive of a Mac mini. Unfortunately, I have only had success with material recorded in 720p (basically, ABC and FOX) -- 1080i recordings are freezing and breaking up.
I drop the recordings into Toast and have it set to "custom" encoding and then "never re-encode." 720p material works great -- 1080i, not.

Oops, I forgot to specify that I'm trying to handle standard-def S3 recordings (over-the-air digital SD streams, either 702x480 or 720x480, depends on the channel)
