Using Roxio Record Now Audio and selecting Create DVD Music Disc, and then using DVD Music Assistant, I named the disc, added tracks and burned.  Roxio reported total size remaing on the DVD-R disc was 3.9 GB.  At about 50% point it stopped and Send Error Report popped up. Then Roxio crashed and DVD ROM was locked, requiring reboot to unlock.  I tried three times with identical result each time.  DVD weas unreadable.

Any ideas what is going on, and how to burn discs as advertised?

Try using Music Disc Creator instead and choosing "create dvd music disc".Seems like people have had more luck using it then DVD Assistant. You also get to customize a bit more and easier than with Assistant.

Music format? Are all the music cuts in the same format?  Does it always crash about the same time (same music cut)?  What is the source of the music?  Are any of them downloaded from an online store or recorded at a different bit rate that what the program can handle. You should be getting an error related to the above but perhaps you are not for some reason.

Have you also tried another batch of discs.  Sometimes there are a few bad discs in a cakebox. Try burning to an RW if you have one to see if it performs the same.  That way you can erase it or just copy it to a regular disc.

If the music is all in the correct format, then try this. What anit=virus do you have?  Sometimes the anti-virus will try to scan the music as you are burning it so that the computer locks. Disconnect from the internet, shut down you anti-virus and try burning again.  If it burns, you may be able to change your setting so that it does not scan when you are burning.
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.
