Hi.  I've just completed a project using Easy Media Creator 9 - My DVD.  I have an HP Slimline s3100n PC with windows Vista.  I have successful burned a DVD before but it was much shorter and less complicated.  This project is 23 minutes long and contains various video clips, music, and photos.  When I went to burn the DVD project, the computer simply shut down while the encoding was taking place.  I found the following resolution information on Roxios website:

http://kb.roxio.com/content/kb/General%20I...mation/000065GN

Update to the latest version of Direct X from the Microsoft website below
Go to Microsoft DirectX download page.
Follow the on screen instructions to download the latest DirectX End-User Runtime.
Once the download has completed, locate and run the DirectX installation.
After installation, you will need to reboot your computer.

Update your video drivers. To find out what video device you need to update.
Windows XP: Click on Start --> Run.
Windows Vista: Click on Start --> and click in the Search field to activate the cursor.
Type "dxdiag" and click on the OK.
Click the Display tab at the top of that window and note your Device Name and Manufacturer.
You can access the drivers by visiting your computer manufacturer's website or by going to the video card manufacturer's website directly.

Disable startup items.
Windows XP: Click on the Start button and select Run
Windows Vista: Click on Start --> and click in the Search field to activate the cursor.
Type "msconfig" and click on the OK button or press the "Enter" key.
Select the Startup tab over on the right side.
Write down which items are checked, and then click the Disable All button in the lower right corner of the screen.
Click on the Apply button and then click on OK.
Click YES to restart the computer.
After rebooting, you may receive a message saying "You have used the 'System Configuration Utility' to make changes to your system....". If you get this message, simply place a checkmark in a box on the lower left side titled, "Do not show me this message again" and click the OK button.

Note: To reverse these changes, follow steps a to c, and then place the checkmarks back in the boxes based on the notes you made. For optimal performance, only Anti-Virus or Firewall software should be enabled (for this test all should be disabled).

Save your project as a disc image and burn it.
Start MyDVD directly by clicking Start-->All Programs--> Roxio Easy Media Creator-->Video and then MyDVD.

Note: It is important to open the program using this step instead of going through the home menu.

After the project is loaded or created, click Tools --> Options, then under Render Using, select Software.
If your show is under 1 hour, go to File --> Project settings and choose High Quality (HQ). If it is over an hour choose checkbox next to Fit to Disc.

Note: Depending on the combination of audio items in your project, you may wish to click the radio button to “Normalize audio levels” box.

Save your MyDVD creation.
Select the Burn button, then select Save as Image (ISO)
When complete, close MyDVD and open Disc Copier or Video Copy and Convert with the Start-->All programs method. Burn the DVD from the ISO file.

Note: The DVD will be burned at the same quality found in the ISO File. [/font][/i]

I followed this advice with the exception that rather than doing the Save as Image, I went straight to burning to disk.  I was thrilled that the project burned and plays.  However, I found that many of the transitions I had used were no longer there.  I found other advice which led me to believe that this was because of choosing "Render Using Software" rather than "Render using Hardware."  I was able to get the transitions back, but now I'm back to being unable to get the project to burn.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how to make all of this work together correctly?  My project is a graduation video for an upcoming party, so I would really welcome any help.  Thanks!

You decided to ignore the important step: first burn to image. Many of us have found that using "software rendering" gives a better result but as a penalty you lose the 3D transitions

Any possibility that it could be a heat related problem.  Encoding stresses the CPU pretty hard and if it is running at high load for an extended period, the computer may just shut down.

Here are the suggestions made at the HP site.  I actually like the idea of having an extra cooling fan.

Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.
