Maybe it doesn't like the brand of media you are using. What brand is it?

(2) What brand was your drive happy with?
(3) What model number is your LiteON ??
BENQ DW1640, in XP Pro and Windows 7
I blame it all on Global Warming / Global Cooling / Global Staying the Same [pick one]

Lite-On has a firmware update that makes the drive recognize more brands of dvds. You can get it here: http://us.liteonit.com/us/index.php?option...&Itemid=153
Select Optical storage and then select your model number.

You might want to check back at that site occasionally. It seems that burner needs updates to recognize some brands of DVDs.

sorry, but i didn't write down the previous firmware's designation.
i burnt a TDK disk yesterday and a couple of Maxells today. i am not sure how to find the MID but if you would let me know, i will check. i tried the roxio disk utility but i didn't see anything with that description on it regarding either type of disk.

mr guru:
now my cd burner (a separate unit) has started acting up. it's also a Lite ON on unit LTR48247S. it seems it will only burn a cd now if i run it in test and burn mode, which slows things down a bunch. i guess its using firmware designated PPB1.
i couldn't find a firmware upgrade for that particular model number at their website, but i inquired via email. hopefully they will respond.

Thanks for the info.
Compaq OEM Drive came with the PC? A new DL DVD/CD Burner at under $30.00, I would plan on replacing it, if funds are available. Slow your burn down and try some Verbatim DVD and CD media.

i think this is the original burner, but i might be mistaken, i've had this unit since late 03 i think it was. what is a DL ? is that a brand name or ? youre probably right, may be worn out. at least its probably no longer supported. maybe there's a 5 yr limit on support from Lite On?
thanks for the help!

No, your burner certainly is not a DL burner. DL means dual layer. I would dump the burner you have now, and get a new one.
