when I try to import from my digital camera it shows me the camera but none of the .jpg images. other import software finds them just fine

The easy solution would be to have the other software import the images.
You can use the .jpg images in Photosuite 8. I'm not certain which menu item you use in version 8 to find the photos. In version 7 it's under Edit and in version 10, it's under Photo.
