When I bring my XDCAM 16:9 footage into a SD project for Toast; it always seems to play the
16:9 footage as fullscreen on a 4:3 display.

What settings do I need to invoke in order for Toast to keep the 16:9 footage letterboxed for
a standard definition 4:3 burn.

Thanks

Although Toast is supposed to automatically recognize this there is a way to force 16:9. Click the More button at the lower left of the Toast Video window, choose Encoder in the window that appears and choose 16:9 as the aspect ratio setting instead of automatic.
I'm just a fellow Toast-user so please don't blame Roxio for any misguidance I may provide. And do let me know if your issue gets solved. Cheers from Eugene, Oregon!

Yes this works; but I had to change the setting on my DVD desktop player to letterbox as well.

Is there any way of telling Toast that although it is letterboxed it still is a 4:3 fullscreen production.

You see I am using the XDCAM movie as the source material for both the HD DVD master
(the client has a HD DVD player) and as the source for the SD letterboxed 4:3 .

Thanks

p.s I quoted myself and not your message! woops!

I'm not certain if I am responding to what you want to know. When Toast authors a 16:9 video DVD the IFO is written as 16:9 widescreen/letterbox/pan & scan which means the settings in the DVD player (and TV) control which playback is used. When my brother used a camcorder that had an anamorphic lens instead of using circuitry in the camera to create his 16:9 movie, Toast insisted on making the video DVD 4:3 full screen regardless of the custom encoder settings. He had to use MyDVDEdit to change the aspect ratio settings in the IFO to get it to display properly. If you want the video to be only viewable as 4:3 fullscreen you might try changing the aspect ratio in the IFO using MyDVDEdit.

This is exactly what I was talking about!

Thanks for the input!
