Does one still need to install the PS3 patch mentioned earlier, in order to play files
on a current ps3 with current firmware?

I'd like to know this as well.
I thought it was only for that particular ps3 firmware.

it was only needed for DVDit Pro HD 6.3 and 6.31. 6.4 does not need the patch.
