When I try to copy a DVD( non-protected) ( Media Creator 10 and Sonic-- Sonic came with my pc) It will burn so many sectors and keep calculating speed but then all of a sudden I get a message saying error writing to disc. I have wasted 7 DVD's. I have no problems at all copying a CD. Could I have gotten a batch of bad DVD's? NOTE-- I have made use of a couple of the DVD's from the same package*

what is your source disc?

You should be aware that no commercial CD/DVD software will copy commercial DVDs (it's illegal to do so)

I am very aware it's illegal to copy protected DVD's and I know this software won't do it. I am not trying to copy a protected DVD. It's a basic DVD-R ( that I own the rights to ) I'm trying to copy.

OK - had to make sure (you'd be surprised how many posts there are where that is the problem laugh.gif)

Try it this way.

copy the DVD using the program, but instead of copying to a DVD, choose to save the image as a .iso or whetever option it gives. Then use that to burn the actual DVD

Greta1975,

you have to be more specific "I've tried this before and nothing" isn't much help! Was there a error, if so what was the error? Make and X speed of DVD media used, DVD Drive ID and firmware version. Did the drive come with the pc, what brand of pc, and operating system used?

When I said I've tried this before and nothing I was referring to the previous reply of trying to save as an iso then burn ut that way. I'm using windows XP and I have no idea of the firmware and and all that. All I know is I can copy CD's but when I try to copy a DVD using Disc copy it will keep calculating speed and the progress shows a certain number of sectors recorded then all at once I get a message saying cannot write to disc. The drive came with the PC which is an HP.

I have an HP a1330n PC. I'm using my usual Maxell DVD-R disc. The speed setting is set to Max. I tried using Sonic DigitalMedia Deluxe v7's disc copy and it still shows can't write to disc. I have no trouble copying CD's. But just can't copy a DVD for some reason.

ISO will not burn. It does the same thing when I try disc to disc copy----------- a window will pop up and say cannot write to disc and then the DVD tray ejects.

I'm trying to establish if the Roxio EMC 10 software will write the image, yes or no?

Once Roxio EMC 10 software has made the image, it fails writing the Image to a DVD Disc, yes or no?

Hang in there Greta1975, we're getting closer. smile.gif

Couple of bits of information that may help

What is the make and model of the drive?

What brand and type of media (-R, -RW, +R, etc)?
If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

Yes it will create an ISO but it just won't burn. It will start to make progess then it calculate speed then it will say cannot write to disc. I am using Maxell DVD-R. The model is TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552L

It could be thedrive itself Greta - I did a spot of googling and found a lot of hits with problems on that particular one:

This from here: http://forums12.itrc.hp.com/service/forums...hreadId=1151959

"I too had the same problem with the TS-H552L CD/DVDW drive. I finally gave up after 2 weeks and doing a complete destructive restore. It appears that after you either add or remove certain software, the drive just kicks the bucket and dies. The model I have is a HP Pavilion a1473w Media Center Edition. (Wait till you see what happens to the graphics card problems later!)

Back to the drive problem.

You will NOT find any drivers or correct firmware no matter who says what. Contact TSST yourself and ask them. The driver problem was supposed to be handled by HP. HP claims it's not a problem and since the model of computers using this drive was discontinued, they no longer support on going support of new drivers or firmware.

There is NO solution to this problem while retaining the original drive. Those who have deleted the Upper and Lower filters were having the software side of the problem. The hardware side of the problem begins with a lack of reading and writing to certain forms of media (CD+R or CD-R, DVD+R or DVD-R) and continues until the drive is no longer reading as a DVD drive at all. Most of you will note that the drive sometimes or always shows as a "Generic CD-ROM Drive" and the drivers are installed for it as such. It will still show (sometimes) as the original "TSST TS-CD/DVDW H552L" when viewed in My Computer, but check the location and drivers. Use Device Manager and check the drivers and software it is using... if you cross check the locations of the drivers, they are either windows standard CD-ROM or non-existent at their root locations.

It should read C:\WINDOWS\system32\ then either or all of these...

DRIVERS
DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
DRIVERS\imapi.sys
DRIVERS\redbook.sys
or drivers\PxHelp2.sys or PxHelp20.sys (which is NOT installed nor valid)

and finally storprop.dll

The drive does NOT have a steady connection to the board. Not a loose wire, but a short between the drive and the drivers when communicating what it is. Even if there were drivers out there (and there are none currently not bundled with the OS on install but missing from the partition!), the system will never be able to fuction because the drive communication is intermittent. Soon you will end up waiting for a DVD to burn and get a blank disc after an hour of it burning at 2.37% speed.

I HATE to say this but the only good fix is to replace the drive."

If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

If it is the drive itself, I shouldn't be able to do disc to disc copies of CD's should I? I have no problems doing that.

A burner has a laser for CD and DVD so one is possible to work and one not.

What operating system came with your PC, XP or Vista?

Try this to test if it's a burner problem or software problem. Download #7 in my signature. ImgBurn is a small burn program, load the Roxio made Image file and burn the DVD at 4X or 8X speed. If you need help click on the guides or forum links from the ImgBurn page.

I'm using XP operating system. I'm trying again right now to do a disc to disc copy. It's just completely stalled. It shows 31,520 sectors of 740,016. Target max burn speed 16x. Current burn speed......calculating. I can rip a DVD and burn it with no trouble. Just can't do disc to disc copy anymore.
