Hello:

I've found this forum extremely helpful and now know I can trust Brendon... laugh.gif

Here's my new issue:  I've burned 2 .iso files (one is 6gb, the other is about 7.5) to my hard drive with no issues.  I'm able to burn the .iso files to a Memorex DVD+R DL disc with my HP DVD Writer 1040d with no problems.  When I try to burn to the same media using my Sony DVD RW DRU-840A, I get error messages every time.  When writing at 8x speed, I get a generic "writing error..." after about 11% finished.  When writing at 6x speed, I get a generic "writing error..." after about 30% finished.  When writing at 4x speed, it actually reaches 100% finished, but then this error message comes up, "session fixation error while writing lead out".  When I try to play the one written at 4x, it seems to work (pics, music, transitions, etc.), but I have not yet watched the whole disc.

What is interesting is that my Sony burner can burn cds and dvds (4.7 gb) with no problems at this point.  I know the easy solution is to just use the HP burner.  However, I'd like to have the ability to use either/or.  Any suggestions as to why it might work with my HP, but not my Sony?  I know Sony bundles Nero with their burners (at least the one I got).  Is Roxio not as compatible for some reason, being able to burn some things, but not others?

Thanks in advance for any help to come my way...

Steve

Make sure that you have the latest firmware for your Sony, and try Verbatim DL discs, instead of the Memorex.

Take GPB's advice on the Verbatim +R DL Media.

The Memorex +R DL media I have checked are Ritek D01 (001) and rated burn speed at 2.4X -see below.
One disc could be better than the next! The Lite-On/HP could have better firmware for the Ritek disc.
You posted in V9 section, if you have a retail version under tools, look for DVDinfo Pro. You can identify you memorex disc's and the burners firmware version.

The Sony DRU 840A is a OEM Toshiba-Samsung. Chipset. Mediatek.
The HP DVD Writer 1040d is a oem rebadged Lite-on burner.

Check that the burner jumpers are set correct and your using a 80 wire 40 pin connector.
How are you set, master, slave, cable select?

Thanks for the reminder.  I had already made sure I had the updated firmware; however, the recommendation to use Verbatim appreciated.  I thought about getting it, but it was so expensive.  The Memorex was only a few dollars less, so thought the quality might still be good.  I finally got a reply from Sony about recommended disc to use for their burner and they, too, say to use Verbatim.  So I will be doing that in the future.  I'll just use up the rest of the Memorex with my HP burner.

Thanks!!

Steve

Thanks for your help as well.  I do have the correct burner jumper setup , one on master and one on slave with the cable I'm using.  Cable wire should also be correct.  I just used what was connected to the earlier burner and the pins all fit right.  I'm afraid I don't understand all the tech stuff you included at the end as I am not that advanced.  Is that what you get when you put in a Memorex disc?

Thanks for your input as well.

Steve
