I have captured 302 minutes of video as MPG2
I can not seem to burn a 12gb project to several disks
1st disk OK but 2nd disk won't play
Quality very poor
I have a desk covered with coasters

I have tried DVD+Rs
and DVD+R DL disks
All fail

Am I faced with a time limit here? EMC10 does not tell me so
Also Fails with Nero8

I am probably trying the impossible

You are looking at appx 5 hours of video here. Do you intend to burn it as a Data disc or render/author to a DVD Video? Disc spanning is available via Creator Classic when burning as Data file. However, you cannot span a DVD-video project. Perhaps you can manually create 2 or 3 Disc set by setting your timeline manually using Videowave/MYDVD which will also help maintain your video quality. Sqeezing the video on even a DL media will reduce the quality. BTW that applies to any Video authoring software you would use.

You cannot span discs when creating video DVD (standard or DL). A standard 4.7GB DVD will only hold 60 minutes of best quality video.

You have not given any information on how you are burning your DVDs, ie. what program in the EMC suite you are using.

If you really need all 5 hours on one disc AND if you are going to play it only on DVD players that can play DivX format, then you can use that highly compressed format by outputting the video wave project to that format.

Not all players will play DivX format.  More here

Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.
