I have 2 macs, both running OSX Tiger, 10.4.   Toast Ti 6 installs fine on my older G4, but won't install properly on my iMac G5.  Any ideas if they are compatible?   I may need to upgrade to V7 but want to verify if this is necessary, since the OS does not seem to be the problem.

That's odd. As a workaround just drag the Toast 6 folder from your G4 to your G5. You do need Toast 6.1.1 or Toast 7.x to work with OS 10.4.
