Before you post in the forum it would help if you were to check where you are posting. Do you have Benue and a Qflix burner? Because that is where you are posting.
Since you you are using Roxio 7 (I assume you mean EMC 7) I will move your post to the correct forum.

It would also help if you were to give some information on what your are trying to do "I try to burn a disc" really tells us nothing: are you burning data, music, video?

Sorry. Like I said I am a newbie and am really frustrated. I am trying to burn a disc and when I put the cd-r media in the disc writer, the software does not recognize the disc. The burn button is grayed out and it states disc not present. I am burning a video disc

Are you trying to burn a VCD or DVD? What kind of burner do you have? Make/Model? What program (version nuber) are you using. The only way you can burn a VCD (video CD) is if you are using DVD Builder? Is that part of you Roxio 7 suite?

Step by step please - what are you doing and what part of the suite are you doing it with?

Also, how big is the file and how long does the movie clip run for in time?

I am burning aVcd on Roxio emc 7 and it does have dvd builder. My burner is a mad dog md-16x3dvd9-8x. I am using xp w/service pack 2. I am thinking that I am having the same problem people are having with the dvd burner not being recognized. I put a cd r in ( i have also tried a dvd )
the light comes on and it makes a sound  or two then stops. I have tried putting in a audio cd to see if it plays. does the same . Nothing will play and I can't burn on it either with any program I have. I wonder if it might be the the update Microsoft Kb314060 problem I have been reading about.

If not, your Mad Dog may be going belly up.  I believe that Mad Dog may have gone out of business.
