Never had this problem before.

Several files I have appear to have an icon of a red circle crossed out. Anyway to convert them to a format that is usable by this program?

Exactly what type of files are these and what version of EMC8 do you have? If these are divx or xvid files, you may not have the proper codecs installed.

MPEG Layer-3 files it appears.

I checked for updates from within the program and it is the most up to date. I belive it is Creater 8? The free one you get with a DVD burner

Are they AVI files. If so, do they use the DivX or XviD codec?

You have a cut-down OEM [free with burner] version of EMC 8. Please read this topic - I think it covers your problem.
