I have a problem that doesn't happen 100% of the time. When I use DVD Copyer on Roxio Easy Media Creator 7.5, after a few minutes of copying, I get the following message: "E: JLMS DVD-Roxi XJ-HD166 (Unrecovered read error-Medium error {03/11/06})"
I'm copying DVDs that are not copyright protected, and as stated some of the DVDs from the same company copy O.K. I have checked on updates from Roxio, and am told I have the latest updates. Do I need to simply replace the software or do I need a new burner. Lately, when I get a copy, it is taking much longer than it used to. I used to get a copy in 16 minutes, and now it takes approx. 27 minutes.

check for dirt on the disc (sounds like the drive can't read it)
Duration for copy - that all depends on how much you are copying and also what else is happening on the computer. If you have any backgroiund apps running, shut them down. It also could be down to the drive having difficulty in reading the disc

If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed

I took your advice but got the same error message. Any other ideas?

You may have a faulty disc - can you copy the contents to a temp folder on the hard drive on the any computer?
Check the disc for scratches and also hold it up to the light. If you can see light coming through, the disc is fubar. If it's just scratches on the shiny side, it can be ground and re-surfaced (there is a kit called 'skip doctor' that works well)

Go into Device Manager, click on the + to the left of IDE ATA/ATAP Controllers, the right click on the Secondary Ide Channel, then click on Advanced Settings. Check to see if Current Transfer Mode is set to PIO. If it is, click on the dropdown arrow to the right of Transfer Mode, and see if you can change it to DMA, if available. If you can't, click Cancel, the right click on the Secondary Ide Channel, again, and click on Uninstall, then click OK, then reboot.
Go back into Device Manager, and see if it has changed to Ultra DMA Mode 2 or 4.
Life is good!
