Get error 1706 when opening program. Downloaded 500 meg update but no way to open the download.

The update won't work with an OEM product (which is what you have). It's intended for the full retail product only

You will probably have to do the clean install (outlined in a pinned post at the top), but you should also be aware that EMC8 and earlier will not work if you have installed Internet Explorer 7 and/or Media Player 11

Did that software come with a Mad Dog optical drive?  If so, it appears that they went belly up, and you won't be able to get any help from them.

Try the clean install, suggested by Daithi.
