I have an in-car stereo which doesn't do what it says on the box! I bought it because it is supposed to play MP3 but it skips tracks and often refuses to play the CD which when I googled seems to be a common problem with the player. I tried to covert to WMA but that didn't play either, I am not up on techno babble and formats so could someone please advise me on what is the best format to convert my MP3's to so they will play on any player. Funny never had this problem with XP for some reason the stero does not like anything I burn in Vista the XP discs play perfectly fine and needed no converting at all.

Thank you.
Sue.

Okay, so you previously burned MP3 discs that your car stereo played just fine?

Do you now have a different system/burner? Or did you upgrade your XP system to Vista? Different hardware can result in more or less readable discs.

Are you using CD-R (write once) discs, or CD-RW discs? Make sure you're using CD-R discs. Also, try some different brands of discs. Verbatim discs seem to have a good track record for myself and others. You can also try slowing down the burn speed to see if that helps.

You could make a standard Audio CD instead of an MP3 CD, which should be playable in any drive. Use Music Disc Creator for that. Of course, you'll be limited to 80 minutes of music. You can use your MP3 files as the source, and Music Disc Creator will convert them as necessary.

So, let us know what you've got in detail, and maybe we can come up with some other ideas.

What software and application are you using to burn with?

Important here, what converting is going on in Vista that didn't in XP and what is doing the converting???

The discs that seem to be working OK were burned on my old machine using Windows XP Windows Media Player, I noticed when I burned my CD's on my new Vista machine they saved as MP3's automatically, I tested the same CD on my XP at work today and that saved as a WMA!! confused.

I have Copy and Convert 3 and thought I would try converting the MP3 files and just wondered what was the best format to convert to so they could play on anything, wma didn't seem to work.

I am using CD-R.

Sorry if I sound confusing.

In what application or software did you burn this CD in Vista, or was it Windows Media Player 11 in Vista?

Your saying you burned/saved them as Mp3 but they show up on the disc as WMA?

I think we need to clarify some terminology here. Burning a CD means to write it. Converting usually means to take one file type and re-encode it (if necessary) or rename it to another type. (ie opening a .JPG file in your photo editor and then saving it as a .BMP file.) When you say your put your CD in your Vista machine and it saved the tracks as .MP3 files, that implies that they were "ripped" or copied off an Audio CD.

Now, I have to confess to not having used (or even having) Roxio's Copy and Convert application. If I were copying an Audio CD for my car, I would tell Copy and Convert to write an Audio CD instead of an MP3 disc and see what it did.
