Hello.  I recently went to Laos and Vietnam and purchased what I thought were CD's of music.  I am putting together a VideoWave production of our trip but when I attempted to rip these songs from the CD's, I discovered that they were VCDs and not CDs.  I am not familiar with VCDs but from what I can tell, the songs are on there and have a *.DAT extensions to them.

Is it possible for Roxio to convert them to MP3 or something else that I can then import into my production as music?  If not, do you have any suggestions on programs that will?  I have searched this on google and have come up with a lot of $30 software packages that will do this but before I buy anything, I wanted to find out if EMC can do this for me.

Also, what is the purpose of VCD?  I can't even play it in my computer.

Thanks

Open Roxio Sound Editor (Music-Audio – Edit and Transfer – Edit Audio) and click on Import from CD/DVD and point it to the VCD.

Windows Media Player will play any VCD, but you have to point it to the DAT file.

CinePlayer will do so with less fuss.

Early DVD Players would play them but as DVD became more and more common support for VCD and SVCD was dropped.

Let us know how you make out.

Thanks for the reply.  My apologies, but I posted this under the EMC 2009 Forum and I am still running the EMC 10 Suite.  I tried to do this but I guess EMC 10 doesn't have this capability??? Please confirm.

Thanks again for your help.

Has been awhile, but I think you can change the file extension from .dat to .mpg.  Those files are MPEG 1.  You can then use Media Manager to extract the audio from the MPEG 1 file.
Phenom X4 965 3.4Ghz, 4gig DDR3, LG 47" 3D TV, Hitachi 1TB HD, Seagate 500GB, LiteOn iHBS112 Bluray, TSSTCorp SH-222A DVD, ATI HD3300 IGP, VIA HiDef audio with Logitech Z5500 THX certified 5.1 speakers, Epson 4490 scanner, Canon 9000Pro MarkII printer, Sharp AL1551CS laser printer/copier, Sony TRV740 8mm digital, Canon HV20 HDV camcorder and Fuji S7000 for still photos, Win7 Home Premium

That is correct, the xxxxx.DAT file is an mpeg1

Edit: should specify that it is the xxxx..DAT file that you find in the MPEGAV folder…
