im pretty sure this can be done but i cant figure it out.
i am finally at the credits... i want to have some clips of video playing in a small widow while the credits are rolling. how can i do this?

Put the video, on an overlay track, at the start of the credits, and resize the video to your liking.

i see. i never noticed the add as overlay option when you go to add a video to the production.

You simply drag the video clip from the Media Selector window (which should be docked on the right side of the screen) to one of the overlay tracks.
With the Add Overlay option you can only add the "canned" overlays not your own video unless you have created a custom overlay from it.
