This is probably simple - but what's the best way to create stills (jpg) pictures from a movie?

Open VideoWave and then Media Selector.  Right click on the file were you want to extract the image and select extract image.  A Window will pop up, navigate to the image you want and extract.  Save it as a jpg.  Remember the image will not be a high resolution image; it is only as good as the resolution of the movie.
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.

That's a very easy way to get clips. I believe you can also save clips using Cineplayer (haven't tried this myself) but most software dvd players allow you to capture a screen from a dvd.

You didn't say what kind of video - a DVD, or a video file. If the Roxio solution doesn't make you happy - search for "Windows Media Player Classic" in google. It's free, and runs every video file in the universe. Pause the video at the point you want the capture, and click on File, Save Image - and boom there you go. The captures are pretty small (about 20K Jpegs), but that might be what you want.
