Avi To Dvd

I have the AVI movies on my HD and tried to play them on Windows media player but all I get is the sound. Is that normal or is it telling me I don't have everything?
I'm sorry for asking these basic questions to you guys, but the more I've read about this, the more I read about add ins and everything else, and I come away more confused! I just don't want to spend money on software and find out it doesn't do what I wanted it to do.
Thanks for your help, and yes, I'm an absolute newbie when it comes to this stuff.

What's the source for the avi files?

Hmm...good question, my buddy downloaded them, they aren't protected or anything. So how would I know what the correct codecs are? And, where would I get them?
Thanks

If you can't find those codecs in an Internet search, come back and tell us what they are and someone will point you in the right direction.

Hey you ARE the Guru of Video! I did just as you said, downloaded that Gspot program ran it, it said I needed XviD 1.1.0 Final, did a search, downloaded that and installed it and GREAT! I can see it now. Thanks!
Now, the question I have is: "Will Roxio Easy Creator convert those AVI movies to a DVD disk so I can watch them on TV?" To add to that question, I just want to make a DVD out of it, and I don't want to do any fancy editing or whatever, so is there any cheaper software that will do that or do I need the full blown package?
Thanks again

You do need the full package - cut down OEMs won't do it as they are crippled (not only are the codecs removed, but they block their use if you manually install them)

Okay, so I do need the full blown version.....Can I assume all the needed codecs are in the software?

Okay, thanks. Now, will Roxio tell me before I burn the DVD that it's missing a codec?
I get the idea I'm over thinking this and making it more complicated than it is.......
Thanks again

TThis could be down to a missing codec or a protected file

Okay, thanks.
I'll have to get the software and give it a try......
Here's a weird one....I've burned many a CD on the burner, but I can't get it to burn anything to a DVD. Do I need to use the software (nero light) that came with the burner? I would think if it burns okay on a CD it should burn okay on a DVD. I'm using the correct DVD disks but it keeps on saying the disk is full.
Thanks

What is the make and model of your drive and have you burnt a data DVD with it?

Yeah, I think that's where I messed up....I "thought" Windows would do it like it does when you copy to a CD. I guess I need software.
Yeah, that's where I think I messed up.........I "thought" windows had a program that let you copy to the DVD, just like a CD. But after asking a guy in work I was told otherwise. So I'm not using any software.....I think that's my problem....As I said, Yep, I'm a complete newbie....

It's a Sony model DRU-810A
I'm about to do a search and see who has the best price on the full blown Roxio software.

Hey thanks a lot for your help...Yep, I did a search and found a place with Roxio Easy Creator 9 for 60 bucks. So it should come some time in the beginning of next week. So I'm looking forward to it.
I hope I don't have to bother you guys too much with too many questions....I only want to copy an AVI file to a DVD so I can watch it on TV.
Thanks again

Remember you will not be copying the AVI file to the disc. My DVD will encode (takes time depending on your computer) the file to a mpg2 file and w/ or w/o a menu burn it to a disc. mpg2 files are the only format that can be read by standard definition DVD players.
