Well that really helped us a lot
Actually it does a little. It means the drive is losing sight of the disc during burn…
That could be a combination of sleazy media and drive problem.
Sleazy is easy to test, get something of known quality like Verbatim.
Drive Problem??? Could be with all the demands of copy, stash, burn & you Defending the Universe your PC is running out of power and the lights are getting dim in the burner.
Try the media idea first, it is easy and you can't go wrong with some good stuff in the house!
Since you have a work around, decide how hard you really want to go after the drive.

i have already had the drive replaced once by dell under warranty, which is now up.
like i said, it burns fine from scratch with data, but has a problem copying. i have a DL verbatim disc i can try to copy... i will let you know what happens.

Now you are getting into compatibility issues between 'plus' and 'dash' and there are problems going from one (4.7) to the other (8.5).
This is optical media you are dealing with and it has its' own rules and nothing in common with magnetic media other than both are round.

i use mostly 4.7 discs, there are just a few projects that are too large, so i'll use a DL disc... my drive is an "optiarc DVDRW DL".
i have a feeling something is up with the drive itself, because after completing discs, my computer has been reading some of the files as corrupt and won't play or copy them back to the computer, even tho the disc was "completed successfully". i had been thinking something maybe wrong with the files, but i tried the discs out on my laptop and no errors, nothing showed as corrupt, all the files seem fine.
so, what does that tell me?
i have been having so much trouble with the computer and/or roxio... i have never used another burn program, so it's hard for me as a novice to know what is causing problems, the drive or the program...

Last time I was in a computer store they had boxes of DL Burners on the floor for $30! LightScribe drives no less!!!
For $30 bucks it takes longer to run tests than it does to swap out a drive…

I think they go with stock items. They changed their user board format some time back and I stopped visiting them.
When DVD burners finally became reachable, they put in an OEM version of the NEC-1100-A and it was a disaster!
Only 2 people in my house, but we have 5 Dells and I am looking to add another…

Usually Dell goes for a OEM specific drive even the firmware is OEM Dell specific!
Look in device manager and list your optiarc drive as it's listed there.
"Sony Optiarc Inc. (formerly Sony NEC Optiarc Inc.) is a subsidiary of Sony Corporation. The company's business is the design and manufacturing of optical disk drives, primarily for the OEM desktop and notebook PC markets.
The company was established on April 3, 2006 as a joint venture between Sony and NEC Corporation, each had share of 55% and 45% respectively. On September 11, 2008, it was announced that Sony will take over NEC's 45% share, making Optiarc wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony[2]. This took effect on December 5, 2008.[3]"

Taiyo Yuden is the Cadillac, but it is only available online. Verbatim is next in line and is available at most brick an mortar stores like Best Buy.

now i am getting curious, what is it that makes one better than another... materials used? machines used?
and for archiving important music, is there a big difference between the Taiyo Yuden ($30) and verbatim ($24) as far as quality or durability, etc?
thanks again, you guys have been a big help.

I have found TYs stand head and shoulders above the other good blank discs.
It's in the nature of the beast that ALL optical discs have errors during the burn process, and these errors are corrected [or ignored depending on the type of disc you're making] during the reading process. You can see/count the errors with a program like the excellent DiscSpeed program available free, here.
The TY discs consistently give me a much lower error count than the Verbatims, and both types are consistently better than almost any other brands I can get. The fewer errors I start out with, the longer the disc should be readable.
Once a disc is written, further errors develop with age, use, and storage. We can't wait for decades to see how long they actually remain readable, but indications with accelerated ageing tests are that they will last for decades and both TY and Verbatims have come up very well in those tests.
