I hope this is the proper section, but I encountered this problem while using MyDVD 9.

I attempted to burn an avi that I had on my harddrive, but when I entered the folder that held the file, the avi's were unable to be loaded, while my mp4 files were instead.

Am i doing something wrong, or missing something? Or is there a legitimate reason why I cant use AVI's with Roxio?

Any help would be appreciated! Again, my apologies if this is the wrong section!

First, what version of the Roxio software do you have?

And second, what is the origin of the .avis?

Life is good!

If the AVIs were unable to be loaded, did they just show a red circle with a bar across it? If so, you probably don't have the right "codecs" [encoder/decoder filters] to decode the AVIs.

An AVI is a container file, filled with compressed video. To use it, you have to have a decompressor which matches the compression method used to squash the video data.

There is a 'Codec Information Appliance' called GSpot, which is a small and free download HERE.  If you run GSpot and drag your AVI file onto the display, GSpot will tell you what audio and video compressors the AVI uses, and whether or not you have them installed. It should then be a matter of finding, downloading, and installing the required codec. It will probably be XviD or DivX.

There is one caveat here. While the full versions of Sonic's programs will handle the most popular codecs, the company has disabled some of its cheaper software from using the most popular video and audio codecs even when you install them. I mention this in case MyDVD 9 Studio is one of the castrated versions - I don't know if it is.

before I start, thanks for the thorough response!

I did as you mentioned and downloaded that program, and it turns out my computer has the codec for each and every .avi I have.

Still when I go to burn the .avi files, I see them as the circle with the slash through it and they are unable to be selected.

any suggestions on how to go from here?

Eisenheim,

If video codecs involved were DivX and/or XviD, or if audio included AC3 [these being the most popular codecs] then I'm afraid it looks as if MyDVD 9 Studio is one of the deliberately crippled versions.

Please see THIS TOPIC and especially post #2 for a rather full discussion on the topic, and see if your software is performing the same.

If your software is behaving in the same manner then I think the only thing you can do is try to return it for a refund as defective software. Selling cut-down versions cheaper than the full item seems legitimate, but deliberately knackering the software and not telling the buyer is just not on.

Regards,
Brendon

Only try and get a refund I think. They've done the nasty thing way down deep in the registry, and I haven't managed to reverse the process. sad.gif

Besides returning the product and getting a refund, which I agree would be the best thing to do if you can, you could try using a converter program to convert those files to mpeg2 format that MyDVD should be able to use. There are a number of free ones out there you can try, like Any Video Converter or Super. Should be able to find one to try if you Google the net.
