When transferring DIVX to DVD as DVD-Video, the quality goes to crap.  Any tips on how to get the best quality for standard DVD players?  Any help is appreciated.

It depends on the specs of the DivX video. What is the resolution of your source DivX (e.g. 640x480) and its length in time? Are you evaluating its quality by viewing on a TV or on a computer? It will look better on a TV. If your video is less than 640x480 then  part of the quality problem is that Toast upscales the video to 720x480 when doing its MPEG2 encoding.

If you are going to be watching videos that are DivX on a TV it is better to get a DVD player that supports DivX playback and not to convert them to video DVD. There also are hard drive players (I believe the Western Digital's WD TV is one) that can play the DivX video on a TV without burning a disc.
I'm just a fellow Toast-user so please don't blame Roxio for any misguidance I may provide. And do let me know if your issue gets solved. Cheers from Eugene, Oregon!

On all of the DIVX files that I have transferred the resolution is slightly less than the 640X480 you mentioned.  I have a DVD player that plays the DIVX, but was burning something for my Dad who has a regular DVD player and wanting to have a similar quality for him.  He has a Pioneer Kuro 60" Plasma with an upscaling DVD player, but the quality is not near what the DIVX looks like on my 40" Bravia.  Is there no way to get the quality to be the same on the DVD Video file as the DIVX?

Even the DivX isn't going to look as good on a 60" TV than on your 40" one.

You can choose the custom encoder settings window and set the average bit rate at, say, 6 mbps and the maximum at 9 mbps and turn on Half-Pel. Then choose Save as Disc Image. When that is finished choose the Image File setting in the Copy window to burn your DVD using Toast's Fit-to-DVD if needed. That's about the best you'll get from Toast.
