I just upgraded my older G4 1.8Ghz 'Sawtooth' with 1.12 G Memory Mac from Tiger to Leopard and did all the necessary post-install upgrades so I am at OSX-10.5.4. I tried to invoke Toast and I got a brief video flash but no Toast. The system error log shows that Toast was invoked but exited with an error code of -1. Again, I see a brief flash on the screen but no window comes up. Roxio support recommended downloading the latest Toast 9 from the web which I did but the result is the same.

Has anyone encountered this problem or have any ideas/suggestions.

Delete the Toast plist and prefs files from your User>Library>Preferences folder and relaunch Toast.

I'm just a fellow Toast-user so please don't blame Roxio for any misguidance I may provide. And do let me know if your issue gets solved. Cheers from Eugene, Oregon!

I had moved them to .bak previously but did a unix rm on them but ended up with the same result.

All I know is Toast 9.0.5 works fine in OS 10.5.x. There are reports where trashing the plist and prefs files sometimes is needed to launch Toast should one of those become corrupted. Also, make certain that any Firewire or USB media-related devices (such as an external iSight camera or an audio device) are disconnected the first time you launch Toast.

I have such devices but none was connected when I tried to start Toast. My subsequent action was to go to my nearby Apple store to see if they could offer any suggestions. I am going to do a clean install of OS-10.5 on a fresh disk to see if that helps. I'll know in a day or so. I appreciated your suggestions.

I just did a complete install of OSX-10.5 on a virgin disk and then downloaded Toast 9.0.5 from the Roxio web site. Upon invoking Toast it failed just as it did on the disk that had been upgraded from Tiger to Leopard. This at least confirms that it wasn't the process of upgrading that caused the failure. Something, perhaps a driver, in OSX-10.5 is causing the problem. My question for Roxio is whether there is any known incompatability between Toast and any appropriate OSX-10.5 driver. I actually suspect that it may be a video problem because I don't even get video before it dies but then that's just a theory. As a reference, the video on this system is an ATI, Rage 128 with 16 MB of memory and I'm running at 1280 x 1024 resolution on a GDM-5510 monitor. Running at lower resolution doesn't change anything. If anyone has any other ideas I'd love to hear them.

Solution found :-) The problem turns out to be the ATI RAGE 128 AGP video card in my G4 Sawtooth. Apparently Toast-9 is doing something in video that Leopard isn't able to do with my current video card. Not something I would have expected to fail. I found out by putting a later generation video card that I borrowed from another Mac in my system and upon invoking Toast it came up OK. Although Apple won't let you install Leopard in an unmodified Sawtooth (originally 400mhz) it allowed the upgrade because it sensed a 1.8Ghz G4 but didn't check for a viable video card. Although video worked it didn't work well enough for Toast.

Hi

I have exactly the same problem that I have struggled with ever since Toast 9 was released. What Video Card did you install that allowed Toast 9 to run.

I bought an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro Mac (the same card used in my mirrored door G4 Mac). I was able to get one at a reasonable price on e-bay and when I plugged it in it worked perfectly, toast came right up. Not only that but the graphics performance of my machine improved dramatically for other applications as well. Definitely worth doing if you want to keep your machine. One thing though, you will need an adapter to convert from DVI to VGA if you are using a VGA monitor or you can drive a digital monitor directly.
