Open System Profiler (in your Utilities folder) and choose the Disc Burning link. Does the Firewire drive show up in the list? Does it describe the types of media it can burn to?

Toast will burn to any drive that Apple shows is supported for disc burning. There may be a problem with the old Yamaha Firewire bridge that is preventing the drive from being supported in OS 10.

I don't know. My understanding is Toast works with any drive that System Profiler reports as capable of burning discs.
