Go to Device Manager, and Uninstall your burner. Right click on the burner entry, and select Uninstall. Reboot your computer, and see if it works.
If not, we can try the next step.

Okay, try downloading the PX engine, and installing it. You can find it here:

BTW, what brand of media are you using?

The media that you purchased is junk. Throw it in the garabage, and get Verbatim media, and give that a try.
Also, go to your burner's manufacturer's website, and see if there is a firmware update for your burner. If so, download it, and install it.

at the risk of exposing my computer ignorance, let me tell you what I think is (not) happening: you know how, when you put any disc into a player/recorder and push in the tray, you hear this whirrling/spinning sound for a few seconds like the computer is trying to find out what to do with the disc?........that's not happening anymore......when i push in the tray, loaded with media or not, there is no whirrling/spinning sound at all............ just like sliding the tray into a dead machine............does that give you any useful information????

You can try one final thing, and if it doesn't work, you may need to get a new burner.
Go back into Device Manager. Click on the + to the left of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Right click on the Secondary IDE Channel, and click on Properties. Click on Advanced Settings. Under one of the Current Transfer Mode boxes, it should read Ultra DMA 2, 3, or 4. If it reads PIO, then there is a problem.
At any rate, back out of the Advanced Settings, right click on that Secondary IDE Channel, and select uninstall, then apply/ok. Reboot, and see if you can burn a disc.
If you can't, open your computer and see if the cables are secured. If they are, then it would appear your burner is dead, and you need a new one.

just to be sure i'm doing this correctly, 1 i right click on my computer and choose Manage....from that screen saying computer management i see 3 functions 1) system tools 2) storage and 3) services and applications........under storage is the option of removable storage and when i try to click it open i get the msg "the service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. This snapin's display may beinconsistant with the removable storage system. If the problem persists, please restart the plug-in."
The device manager is showing under the System Tools category and has no + in front of it.....clicking on it bring up the "library" which lists " computer, disk drives, display adaptors etc, including the DVD/CD-ROM drives, but i find nothing that says "IDE ATA/ATPA controllers.............am i looking in the wrong place????

Let’s try it by the numbers – Control Panel
1. System
2. Hardware
3. Device Manager
4. DVD/CD-ROM drives
What does it have to say?

Do you have a listing for IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers? If so, take a look at the attached image, in Jim's post. Now that you know how to get to Device Manager, go back to my last post, and do what I suggested you do.
