I am trying to create a simple dvd with home movies. All I want is to add transitions every time the camcorder was turned on and make a chapter menu to navigate to specific parts of the movie. My edit chapter screen does not have the checkbox. I have tried reinstalling the software but I have gotten nowhere. This was real software purchased with a box.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Check out this post.
I understand how to mark the chapters, I just can't get it to generate a chapter menu so I can have thumbnails and select what chapter I want to go to from a menu. I seem to be missing the checkbox to generate the chapter menu from the edit chapter window. Any idea how to get it?

If you right click the title and select Edit Chapter, does the dialog box that comes up show a box to check to include Generate chapter menu?
Here's another post with illustration.

No, therein lies my problem. I know it should be there but it isn't. Is there some way to unlock it? I think I have the full version.

In the Project View area on the left in MyDVD, make sure you are on the Menus tab not the Movies tab. That check box does not show up if you are on the Movies tab & edit chapters.
