When I create a Blu-ray Project using MyDVD with only pictures, the resulting files are created at 1920x1080. However, when I use pictures and HD video clips from my camera I get this - MPEG4 Video (H264) 1280x720 24.00fps [Video]....a lower resolution.

The format of the clips from my camera is - MPEG4 Video (H264) 1280x720 29.88fps [Video Media Handler (jpn)]

So it seems like MyDVD won't upconvert my videos to 1920x1080....is this true or is there a way around this?

thx

What are the settings in MyDVD? What project type did you select?  720P is a legal Bluray format and perhaps MyDVD is using 'smart render' which means it would not up-convert those files.

I selected Blu-ray for the project and fit to disc. Then I turned off fit to disc and selected HQ  which says its 1920x1080. I also tried 2-pass encoding. None of these worked. The same for selecting AVCHD.

I have a mixture of pictures and video clips so the lower resolution affects the pictures in the project...not as clear. Is there a way to turn off smart render if thats the problem?

I have a short 720P clip.  I'll do some tests to see if I can duplicate what you have done.

I get the same thing.  I'll pass this along.

I tried the conversion program that comes with Creator 2009 but it doesn't work well...especially if theres much movement in the video.

For now I used VideoWave to create 1920x1080 MPEG-2 (Blu-ray HQ) files for each part of my video and then assembled those using MyDVD to write 1920x1080 Blu-ray and AVCHD DVDs. The quality is good but not great. This is a work around.

Haven’t worked much with the higher rez available in BD that much but as a rule in SD you can’t convert up without losing quality…

The hype that comes with BD players about “upconverting DVDs” is pure bunk! I ran side by side testing and there is no difference. – sorry, I am putting my soapbox away now…

But jumping up from 1280 to 1920 and 720 to 1080, I just don’t see any good looking video coming from a 150% increase! You said it ‘didn’t look good’… I am guessing it lost the crisp appearance and came out a little fuzzy?

I know Gary did raise the question but we have not received an answer yet.

Just to be clear, I'm not looking for improvements in quality by upconverting from 720 to 1080. My video has 1080+ high res images and 720 video clips. If the final video is at the same res as the 720 clips then the quality of the images (down resed to 720) suffers to the point that its not acceptable. My work around upconverts the clips with a little loss to 1080 and maintains the resolution of the images at 1080. Again, not the best solution but acceptable.

Hopefully we will get an answer soon.  In stead of creating your project in MyDVD, start with Videowave.  Create a 16:9 project. Add the images and video and then output to MPEG-2 HiDef 1080P or Blu-ray AVC SP.   That should do it. YOu can then use that file in your MyDVD project.

Oops... sorry.  Didn't get a definitive answer, but the person stated that he thought MyDVD was working as designed.  Haven't gotten any other info back.
