I just bought the Roxie IDE External enclosure, and am unable to even see my hard drive that I installed in it. (I installed Back on Track.) I need to get it to display my hard drive (external) so that I can retrieve or copy files to my new laptop. It just tries to back up files on my new computer, but that's not what I need. (yet)

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Back story is my Gateway laptop on/off power button broke, so I took out the hard drive and put it into Roxie, got a new Toshiba laptop, hoping to get my precious files & photos onto my new computer or cd or whatever.

I hope someone knows how to proceed. TIA!

I think there is a misunderstanding as to what a backup program does, and how it works.

A backup program creates a file, or set of files. It does a restore from these files it created.

If you did not have it on the drive from the computer that died, then it would be irrelevant.

What you need to do is get the drive from the other computer recognized by the new computer, whether as an internal drive, or as an external drive.

Maybe one of the more technical folk can explain how to do that, but it is NOT what a backup program does.

I kept working with it and finally got it to recognize my drive. I didn't need it for the backup utility, I just wanted to transfer files from the hard drive to my new computer, that I couldn't get to because of my on/off switch breaking. I think rebooting helped, as it worked after I did that. This turned out to be an excellent way to retrieve my files, as I had hoped.
I can also use it as a backup drive after I finish getting my files off it.
Thanks!!

Glad you got it working.
