Often Roxio Classic Creator v10.0 fails to import a Data Disk CD session when I insert the disk in the drive. Can anyone tell me why? When the CD fails to import, the Import button on the toolbar is also disabled. When the import works, the button is enabled and I can import the files into a project.

Most likely it fails because the disc is not appendable and was finalized at some point.

I handle all my CDs the same way. In fact I just open the drawer when the burns finish. I don't click anything and just let Creator close the burn screen automatically. Creator seems flaky to me.

The decision to leave a disc Open or Closed is made before you click OK!!!

Opening the drawer has absolutely nothing to do with it and never did…

It is all decided after you click Burn but before you click OK, note the check mark in Read Only. All three of these DVD’s will be closed.

You need to spend a little time in the Creator Help files:

Lots of good info on how to use the software in there.

That is all very nice but you missed my original statement that the Import button is disabled so all that Help information is useless. I have read that Help many times but it doesn't tell me how to enable the button. Furthermore I only had the one drive checked and Creator decided for me how to close the drive. It did not give me any choice.

That button is only available if you have an open disc.
If your disc has been closed you can't import.
Do as Jim says and make sure you're following the proper procedure.

That is correct, once that disc is Finalized, it is final!

What you can do to use those files and start anew is copy them into your new project and start off right with a new disc.

A thought would be to use some RW discs for practice until you have the procedures nailed down… Then go with R media for reliability.

What prompted my original request was that I WAS using an RW CD. I added several items to the project, burned the CD then came back later on several occasions to add another file or two. Finally on the fourth pass Creator choked and wouldn't accept the CD. I did othing to change any of the default options.

I then used Creator to erase the disc and start over.

Type of disc, R or RW makes no difference at all... Of course only RW can be erased but they wear out and usually fail catastrophically with no warning...

Now how would I know about that huh.gif

And actually, if you were able to add files, then you must have unchecked the "Read Only" disc button, because the default is for it to be checked, finalizing the disc. (Unless it behaves differently when it detects an RW disc.) But, as was said, you can finalize an erasable disc so that you can't add more files to it without first erasing it.

The other possibility is indeed that the RW disc was becoming unreadable so EMC was unable to properly import the previous session. Write once discs are better known for long term reliability than RW discs.
