I have a Dell computer with an Optiarc DVD writer. I recently started using the DVD writer for doing ISO backups of my son's movies. I have used the writer for backing up small files before, however mainly CDs were used.

The burning software on my PC is Roxio version 9. I was able to rip the ISO to my HDD with Roxio (8Gb file image), but when I try to burn it to disk it would always fail. I read that I should try the Verbatim DL disks, so I purchased Verbatim DVD+R DL 2.4x disks, the problem still persisted. It would be a sense error. I then thought it was file size related so I made various files of diff sizes (750Mb, 1gb, 2gb). These failed with the same error writing with Roxio to the DVD. I was using the functions to write from within the Roxio Suite. I called Dell and they tried and it failed. The last test they tried was to bypass Roxio and use the OS. They did a right-click copy of the file and paste to the DVD drive. Three things here- One it was still using Roxio, as Roxio has that Drag-to-Disc function and I have the panel at the bottom the screen with Roxio on it showing it was doing the work. Two - when it completed Roxio popped up a message and asked me how did I want to close and finalize the disc. Third - It worked!! The tech stated that I should try and uninstall Roxio and reinstall.
I still thought this was odd since Roxio did the burring, so I have not uninstalled Roxio. I decided to try Imgburn and burn and ISO to disc. The results are another failure.

Here is the Roxio error I get...
Sense: 04 ASC: 09 ASCQ: 00 (Command 2A)

You have posted under Creator 2009 yet you refer to EMC 9 using Drag-to-Disk. Do you have both versions?

Have you checked to see if your DVD burner has the latest firmware? This is probably not the problem but you may want to check to be sure.

There is an update available for the retail version of EMC 9 but it will remove some functions.

You could also try deleting the device driver. Go to the Device Manager and uninstall the DVD/CD driver (Open the DVD/CD in the Device Manager) then Right click on the DVD/CD device then Uninstall. Reboot your computer and the OS will reinstall the driver. Before you do this check to see if you drive is operating in DMA mode verses PIO mode.

Hello MTC,

You're in the right forum now.

Firstly, if Dell could right-click and drag a file to the DVD then the disc must have been formatted for Drag-to-Disc. If you have a formatted disc inserted then D2D will seize control of the drive, and you won't be able to write to it with Creator. The writing system used by Drag-to-Disc is incompatible with a lot of other drives/systems and is definitely NOT recommended for backing anything up. Personally, I'd uninstall Drag-to-Disc.

The first part of the error you've listed is from your drive, not from Roxio software. The stuff about the PX modules is just the software telling you what version of the Sonic PX engine you're burning with.

You could try updating the PX burning engine to 4.10 with a download HERE, but I doubt that it will help any.

The error Sense: 04 ASC: 09 ASCQ: 00 that your drive is reporting, is a Track Following Error. This is a hardware error reported from the drive. If ImgBurn is failing too, this would tend to confirm that your drive is having problems following the track on the disc, as ImgBurn is much more reliable with DL discs than other software.

Is this only happening with DL discs or does it happen with SL discs too?

Not sure what the difference is but I have Roxio Creator 9.

Dell checked the firmware version when I called them.

Tried that. This time ImgBurn reported Power Calibration issues. Different error, yet still unable to burn.

Dell did the update and this did not correct the problem

I have only tried DL DVD discs. Everything works fine with CDs.

If ImgBurn also reports a Power calibration problem then you very likely have a problem with your burner.
Burning CDs is different from burning DVDs. Can you burn standard (SL = SIngle Layer) DVD

Still unclear on what program your have: Roxio Creator 2009 or Easy Media Creator 9 (aka EMC 9). If you really have a program called Roxio Creator 9 then most os us are unfamiliar with it and it may be a subset of EMC 9

Hi Walt,

Roxio Creator 9 is what EMC 9 calls itself, so I think the poster has EMC 9.

I agree with you. A calibration error means the drive could not find a suitable setting to burn the disc properly in that drive. The drive uses a different set of optics for DVDs versus CDs, so it is quite possible for the drive to be having difficulties burning DVDs while it's quite happy with CDs.

MTC I think your drive is having problems - at least with the type of DVD you're using, if not with DVDs in general.
I suspect hardware difficulties rather than software ones.

Cheers,
Brendon
