I have an old Sony Digital 8 Handycam.  I am using EMC9 with a Dazzle to copy old tapes to my computer.  I was able to copy the tapes but they all have squiggly lines on the bottom (about one-eighth of an inch).  Is there any way to get rid of the lines on the bottom or to copy the original tapes without the lines?

Load one of the videos into Video Wave and then turn on the TV safe zone (icon above the preview screen).  Is it inside or outside the TV safe zone?  If outside, it probably won't show.  That squiggly line is an artifact of capture so it will normally be there.
Regardless of what I say about computer maintenance, there is no need to defrag a solid state hard drive.

Hello, I have the same problem on EMC 10.  Are you saying that if the line is inside the TV safe zone there is no getting rid of it?

Thanks.

By corollary, yes.  Read this about TV safe zone.

How did you capture the video?  From what device?  What capture device.  If from a VHS player, was the tracking adjusted properly?  US or Europe (NTSC or PAL)?

The video is being captured through SVideo connection on a Sony Hi8 Handycam to a Dazzle DVC100 USB device.  I am using the Video Capture feature in Roxio EMC 10.  The capturing format is NTSC.  The options for capture are DV (720x480, AVI); DVD HQ (720x480, MPEG-2, 8Mbps); DVD SP (352x480, MPEG-2, 4Mbps); DVD LP (352x240, MPEG-1, 1.7Mbps); and VCD (352x240, MPEG-1, 1.12Mbps).  I have only captured 3 segments of 1 2 hour tape and I captured those in the DV (AVI) format.  I assumed this was the best quality since the "Record Time Left:" is least when this is selected.  I was really not sure which to use, but I wanted to get the best possible format for capturing my family's video footage.  My intent is to make DVD's of the "home movies."  I plan on collecting all the related snippets of video (eg. child 1's bdays, concerts, etc.; child 2...).  Do you have a suggestion for which format to capture in?  Is DVD HQ good enough?  I tried what you advised earlier in this topic (bring into Videowave and turn on TV safe zone).  It looks like this squiggly line would not be inside the zone.  In fact, it looks like there is a lot all around the edges that won't be in?  The TV safe zone takes up a lot of space around the edges.  Does anything behind that TV safe zone appear on the end product?

I suppose my next question is about next steps...Now that I have video captured, what is the best way to get it on a DVD?  I mean which Roxio tool should I use?  And is there something special I need to do to keep that squiggly line out?  I have had Roxio installed for a while, but have not had much chance to do a whole lot with it.

Hopefully I have not overloaded you in this post.  I really appreciate your quick response to my first post.  Not just for being quick, but also for replying and being very helpful.

Thanks

DV (AVI) capture is the best if you have the hard drive space for it.  With mpg2 capture, your computer needs to convert the video coming into your computer on the fly.  Use this only if hard drive space is at a premium.

Older tube type TV's lost about 15% of the picture; newer TV lose less than half that.  The only way of knowing is to burn a couple of short project to a DVD and play them.

To make sure that you see all the video, add a color panel to the main track.  Make it as long as you want - up to 60 minutes for best quality video.  Add each video file to the overlay track and adjust the size to meet what you want.

Make sure that the Dazzle device is plugged into a USB device on the back of your computer.  Make sure that you have the latest drivers for that Dazzle device (here).See if there is an adjustment for tracking on the camera.  Capture in 20-30 minute segments for best results.  Update the drivers for your video card.  That may help.

This is a "How to" for Video file to DVD.  It is just not real simple of you want to do any editing.
Here is a workflow strategy developed by Jim Harden
Here are some videos that will be of big help during the editing (karri's videos)
Here are some that cover different processes.

There was an update from EMC 9.0 t EMC 9.1.  Did you make that update?  I'm not sure it is still available.  It had to do primarily with Vista compatibility.

I don't know if it will help that squiggly line.  Could you describe the line in more detail?  Is it moving or still, vertical or horizontal? Colored, white, other solid color, etc.

Please post your computer specs in your signature via My Controls at the top of this page and then looking at the options on the left.
