Having the same sort of problem with Roxio. 0x80004005 error when trying to convert an .avi file to DVD format and burn it. At a loss on it and there is no direct relationship to this error and a specific cause.

Like the person whose thread-hijack was separatead out to become this thread, you are necroposting - posting to a long-dead thread (6 months old).
Error 0x800004005 translates as "I can't figure out what it is so this is simply an error".
What kind of .avi file? Where did it come from? How are you trying to convert it? It's not a one-size-fits-all subject.

Sorry... Google searches don't date threads.... Saw someone having the same problem and added to it.
What kind of .avi file? (little lost on this one) It is a movie that I wanted to take off of my PC and put onto a DVD so my girls could watch it in the DVD player in the car. Not sure if that is what you are asking me.
My friend gave me the file. The file converts into .mp4 or Quicktime without any problem through Xilisoft without any issues at all. They are able to watch it on their iTouch's without any problems. Owned Xilisoft converters before buying Roxio EMC 10 suite to convert their DVD's to play on their iPod's and now iTouch's, but the Xilisoft versions that I bought do not convert .avi to DVD playable format.
I am going into REMC 10 and selecting Video, Compile DVD's and Movies, selecting Video Compilation, adding the file from my HDD to the Source, selecting my DVD burner for Destination and clicking Burn. It starts the burn and says it is 8% of 1 of 1 and then crashes with the error listed.
Again this is all from memory so don't burn me at the stake for leaving out a detail or 2 in this process. Everyone with a bitch about this is right... this is a simple process and Roxio, as a whole, has let a lot of people down with the amounts of errors that the application has had over the last few versions. Support is ultra tough to get it seems as well. Sorry but a LOT of us out here are very frustrated with the results we get for the price of these products. You know we try and do things the right way and pay for name brand products like these and have all the problems, while people downloading free or pirate crap from who knows where have no problems at all. Makes me want to go back to using Toast at this point.

Launch Videowave, add your movie and then Output to DVD mpeg, best quality. If it renders properly then use myDVD to burn the mpg file to a DVD. If it doesn't then there may be a problem with the file.
If these are commercial movies the what you are doing is of course illegal.

One point from the post - if you 'wanted to go back to Toast' that would suggest you're running a Mac and NOT a PC
Running in an emulator is never guaranteed to work for video (there are a lot of known issues regarding the graphics drivers)
If you aren't using a Mac however, just ignore that bit

If it ain't broke, fiddle with it until it breaks, then fiddle with it until you get it fixed
