How do I record all the video on my camcorder My tape has several sections where there is no video

I have a camcorder that my parents used. There are several sections of dead video. Roxio sees this and pops up a prompt "No video detected. Do you want to save the project?"
Is there a setting that would allow me to continue recording the project and edit out the dead space later on?
