I bought this software over the weekend to make some DVDs. The software that came with my computer has presented problems (both Windows DVD Maker and Power2Go) and I thought to give it a try. I installed the software and gave it a whirl. I discovered that I could import any file, but .AVI files encoded with DivX. This is a problem because I easily have hundreds of hours of footage that I would have to convert to .WMV or other file formats to put onto DVD. What is the simplest way to rectify the issue of not being able to import these DivX encoded .AVI files?

And let me say that Roxio costumer service has been a real joke. From telling me to return the software to the retailer - even though I told them they would only give me a copy of the exact same product - to not standing behind their own product.

I don't believe that this cheap, stripped down version of the full software, supports DivX. The real deal does.

It is shameful, that Roxio would put out this piece of trash software. sad.gif Their full functioning products work pretty well.

To say I am livid would be an understatement for what I've dealt with from Roxio today. I called my retailer to see if they'll take back the software that will possibly never fully work. No, due to my state's copyright laws. They will only be able to exchange it for the same exact product, which they stated will obviously not help me at all. They suggested the manufacturer. I called Roxio and couldn't speak to anyone. I finally just chose a number and got someone. They tried to shift the focus of my anger from them to the retailer and tried to relinquish all responsibility for their software and refused to discuss the possibility of a manufacturer rebate/refund. I finally was able to talk to someone else who gave me a number to call to get tech support. I spoke to tech support and they sent me some directions which did not apply to my product and when I called back they wanted me to pay to get the actual tech support I needed and when I asked to talk to a manager, they hung up. It wasn't the only I was hung up on, they hung up for a total of four to five times today.

Thank you, sir, for your service to our country. It's a shame that your comrades were treated the way they were after returning home from the war and were simply victims of misdirected blame and hatred.

I've read that once before, but hoped I can find a work around. I did find that work around. What is it? At least for the time being its converting files to .WMV to import into the program. However, its very time consuming as it takes the same amount of time to convert it as it would to play it. When you have 233 hrs of footage, that's a lot of time wasted on a product which should (in theory) import them into a DVD project.

Is your goal to burn them to DVD's so as to have Video DVD's that will play in a standard set top DVD player? If so, instead of rendering (converting) them to WMV files, try rendering them to MPEG2 files which is the standard for DVD. If you do that, then MyDVD shouldn't have to render them again when you burn your projects, whereas it will if they are WMV files. The more times you re-render (encode) the video, the more quality you'll loose.

Where can I find a free MPEG-2 converter?

there's lots of different ones out there. Like Super, Any video converter, and so on. A source for video information is http://www.videohelp.com

Just out of curiosity, if I encode the .AVI as MPEG-2 instead will the process of making the DVD be expedited? In other words since MPEG-2 is already used to make DVDs, will it take as long to make the DVD?

That software you bought is no longer supported by Roxio since it is 2 years out of date. If you paid more then $5 you got ripped off by the store mad.gif

It is a limited version of the old EMC 9 and does not support DivX video.
You will have to use 3rd party software to convert the DivX avi to mpeg2 which should be compatible with your software. Unless you try to make editing changes to the mpeg video, the burning to DVD should be "fairly quick", depending of course on your system and DVD burner.
BTW, a standard 4.7GB DVD will only hold 60 minutes of video at best quality no matter what your source file size or format is.

I've already started using a third party convert to convert from the AVI to the MPEG-2, rather than from the AVI to WMV. My problem has been when I've made test DVDs with AVI files it seems to take up to 3 hrs just for the videos to encode. If it's easiest to do make the DVDs via MPEG-2 due to quality, I'm assuming you're confirming that it will take less time to make the DVDs?

I am not quite sure what you mean by "it will take less time to make the DVDs"? Starting from DivX, converting to mpeg2 (with whatever 3rd party software) and then burning the mpeg2 to DVD will certainly take lots less time then first going to wmv and then to mpeg2 when you burn the DVD. There will also be a considerable loss of quality if you first go to wmv.

Which encoding takes 3 hours? From avi to wmv or mpeg2 or what? How long in time is the video you are encoding? Encoding speed depends on your system specs, video card, source format destination format and perhaps another dozen factors. unsure.gif
