Hi Guys

Spent 30 mins writing a full description, just to have the gremlins shut down my internet connection about 10 secs before I wanted to hit the 'post problem' key.......... so shorter version.

Using videowave to make production of photos. Tried just adding to VW, tried using 'new slideshow' feature. Been through all activities in both productions. Doesn't seem to matter what I do - some photos are dropped during encoding using My DVD to create an ISO file. It is not the same photos dropped each time I try - seems random, but mostly after 50-70% of encoding and seems to go in batches then sometimes get worse towards the end, sometimes gives the last 20 % perfectly after a batch of dropped photos.

When using preview in both videowave and My DVD everthing looks perfect. Production is 48 mins long, has circa 500 pics, some with text, some with motion, some coloured panels with text, transitions between pics and panels.

I have spent 3 weeks, just about every day, all day, trying to find a solution. I am not a dummy, but also a long way from being an 'expert'. This is posted from my lapto as I don't want anything to impinge on the desktop which is where I have been doing the work on this project.

Currently, my desktop is not connected to the internet, has anti-virus and all windows and other software updates disabled. It also has as many windows and other features turned off that I am comfortable to do with my level of knowledge. (can probably list them if I have to). It has had all hardware drivers checked and updated wher found lacking. The hard disc has been cleaned and de-fragged. The pagefile has been changed to 500Mb min, 4500 Mb max.

I have tried my project from scratch after all the above was done and PC switched off and then on again. I just don't know what elese to do, and find it hard to accept that a 48 min, fairly simple " photo slideshow with a few bells" just won't encode.

Can anyone help? Is ther something basic or simple I have missed?

Compose in an editor, then copy/paste. You will never have a connection let you down this way.

In VW, Tools – Options – Render. Set it to Software.

First, if you opened VideoWave, and clicked on "New Slideshow", you eliminated VideoWave, from the process of creating a slide show, and opened the Slide Show Assistant, an absolutely useless program. The maximum number of photos you can have, using the useless Assistant, is 99.

Folks, who have used the Assistant, have had the problems that you are having.

When you open VideoWave, unless you have widescreen photos, you don't need to do anything except add your photos. NEVER click on "New Slideshow"! It is a feature that Sonic, not Roxio, thought was a good thing. They were wrong. The programmers, who added that feature, never used the program.

Do your slide show over again, by opening VideoWave, and bringing in your photos. Once you are done with your production, save it, then close VideoWave, open MyDVD, and bring in your VideoWave production for authoring the menu, etc., and burning.

Let us know if it still drops photos.
Life is good!

Thank you both for your replies, (and for the tip on composing elsewhere which I am now doing).

Render is set to software. I haven’t tried hardware render as other users seem to have had problems. Is it worth trying?

Here is a more detailed description of what I have done – hope I’ve included everything. I have been working on this project for 4 weeks, (about 2 weeks trying to solve the encoding problem) and am now at a loss as to what else to try.

I really want to get a nice DVD as it is for my cousins in Canada who I met for the first time while on a fabulous RV holiday in June.

1. I started my project in Videowave, adding photos, transitions, text etc. Saved the project, closed down and re-started the PC.

2. Opened My DVD, added the dmsm file, selected burn, to produce ISO file (not to burn disc).Saved the project. Closed down and re-started the PC.

3. Opened my DVD opened the dmsd file and burned the disc, which when played back on DVD player had missing photos.

4. Deleted the ISO file and dmsd file, cleared out the proxy cache, went back into videowave to the project, deleted and re-added the missing photos saved the file again then repeated step 2 and then previewed in My DVD instead of burning a disc. Different photos were missing. Did this several times, closing down the PC and re-starting before each re-try.

5. Tried outputting to mpg2, best quality from Videowave, then bringing this into My DVD and previewing while encoding – seemed to be worse, so I have ditched it.

6. Started again using slideshow. Interestingly, it did allow me to add all of the photos, (but adding features limited). It wasn’t such a good show and I still had the encoding problem, so I have ditched it.

7. This is what set me off trying to improve PC performance, thinking it might be not enough processing power, too many background activities etc. Unplugged from Internet, detached printer, cleaned and de-fragged HD, checked HW drivers, disabled Norton and SW auto updates, windows indexing, windows defender, and a few other windows activities. Increased pagefile min & max. Set PC performance to high and for programs to have priority. Desktop PC is still in this state.

Is there anything else I can try? Is the only answer to start a new videowave project from scratch?

Many thanks for your patience
Margaret

Oops

Missed something out...... after producing first ISO file, burned a disc using the ISO file - some photos dropped.

A video card is the most likely problem you are having. But you need to do the testing, we can’t answer what might happen on your PC???

For Testing:

Use the option in MyDVD to burn to [b]Folder Set[b].

Then use CinePlayer and browse to that folder to play it.

If it works, Video Copy and Convert can burn that folder set to your DVD

Now you know how to test do the test grandpabruce suggested.

Hi guys

Well, a bit of a frustrating week, but finally made it.

Tried your suggestions. Burned a folder set. In the preview window that shows the encoding progress, I could see it appeared to be dropping some photos, so it didn’t come as a surprise that there were missing pictures when viewing in CinePlayer.

Started completely from scratch with a new VW project using just half of the photos (around 250). Saved the VW project, closed down PC & rebooted. Opened My DVD. Burned a folder set, could still see pics were being dropped, and confirmed this when playing in CinePlayer.

After rebooting, started again with new VW project using half the photos. This time, could see the dissolve transition was not working, and no amount of re-booting and re-opening VW made any difference, so used a different transition. Burned a folder set – success – started to feel better.

Added the rest of the pics and completed the project, saved, re-booted PC. Output file from VW as Mpeg2 best quality. Plays perfectly in CinePlayer. Using MyDVD, no menu, cut ISO then burned disc. Plays perfectly on my TV DVD player and really love all the features of VW that I have used.

So, I can only assume that the dissolve transition file was on the blink and has finally fallen over. Pity, as I like that transition, but I can live without it – there are plenty of others.

So, I’m now a happy bunny. Going to see if the normal process I use will work (bringing dmsm file into MY DVD, using a DVD menu, creating ISO file, then burning disc), but if not............... I have the mpeg file. Then it’s down to processing the rest of the last 10 years of photos!

Thank you for all your help.
Margaret
