Extra Long Burn time resulting in unsuccessful burns Easy DVD Copy 4

Bought Easy DVD Copy 4 yesterday, and have had a few issues...
Burning a DVD takes 20+ hours and results in a DVD that cannot be played in the DVD player, nor on the PC, and on choosing "explore" in Windows Explorer, the DVD appears to be blank.
The files being attempted to be burnt are 8 .avi files which were downloaded from the internet and were able to be played on the pc, and these were bundled in the program with a custom menu (imported background image and playing with font appearance).
The DVD being used is DVD-R, brand new blank disc.
The options chosen were Disc/Disc Image, & Custom Profile DVD.
Once we click "Burn" it moves straight to 8% complete, then takes 20 or more hours to get to 100%.
The disc is then blank and useless.
OS is XP.
The .avi files are on an external drive and Easy DVD Copy 4 was installed on a secondary internal HDD.
We were able to bring the .avi files into the program which then showed as 8 chapters and all seemed fine until we click "burn"
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jade.

Hi Jade,
Hard to say whether the problem is arising during the preparation of the files, or the attempt to actually burn them to disc.
AVI files will play on a computer, but often won't play on a DVD player if they're just straight copied onto a data disc. If you're making a DVD-Video disc they need to be converted from AVI to MPEG-2, and this can take a lot of time.
To separate the preparation from the actual burn is a good idea, as it shows you which process is having the problem. Also it's more common to find difficulties during the preparation than during the burn, so you avoid wasting blank discs.
What you need to do is "burn" to a disc image on your hard drive instead of a DVD disc. This puts a disc image onto your hard drive, and once that has been prepared properly you can then burn it to plastic.
I don't have a copy of Easy DVD Copy, so can't show you screenshots. Does your Easy DVD Copy give you the option to select a disc image as your 'destination'? If so, that's what you need to do.
Try and burn your videos to a disc image, and deal with any conversion errors which show up there.
Once you successfully make an image, you can burn it to plastic, which should ytake about 15 minutes.

Hi Brendon,
Thanks for your answer, yes, I believe that it does have an option to burn to ISO.
Do you mean do a "burn" from AVI to MPEG-2 to ISO and then from the new ISO to plastic?
Or do you mean from AVI go straight to an ISO burn and then ISO to plastic?
Jade.

I believe they're about 40-60 mins per avi. Total size is approx 4.4gb burning to a 4.7gb disc

Jade.
As a experiment try ONE "40-60 min avi" on a single layer DVD and tell us how that works out for you!

If you are trying to create a standard video DVD that is playable on all/most DVD players from those 8 avi files, forget it. When creating a DVD, the source files size means nothing, its the time length that is important. A standard 4.7GB DVD will hold 60 minutes at best quality. You can get more on a DVD but the quality will be reduced the more you try to squeeze on the disc. I would recommend no more then 2 40 minute avis per DVD.
If your DVD player is able to play those DivX avis (which is what I assume they are) you can just copy the files to the DVD as data and play them.
