Did you follow the steps as outlined in the Help system? The "Start Output" button only becomes active after you have rendered the avi file using the "DV Camera/Create Video File" option. You cannot create the avi file beforehand - it has to be done in this 2-step process.
Select DV Camera then "create Video File". If the file already exists you can overwrite it (or give it a new name or rename the old one). After rendering the "Start Output" button becomes enabled and you can record the video to the camera.

Thanks so much for your help. I'll try what you suggest. Another question: I transfer the video to my camcorder so that I can later transfer it to my Sony DVDirect DVD maker. Is there a way to transfer my video from my computer directly to the DVD maker, thus eliminating one step? T I A.
Standard. My goal is to make a DVD of my video so I transfer it from the computer to my camcorder, later using my Sony DVDirect DVD maker to make the DVD. Thanks for your help.

Why wouldn’t you use a DVD Movie Editing and Authoring program in your computer that was designed to do just that???
One good one is called Roxio Creator 2009

I didn't know that was part of Creator 9. I'll give it a try. Thanks again.

Video editing and DVD authoring are the main features of Creator 2009 and have been for 5 or 6 versions.
BTW, there is no such program as "Creator 9". There is a 2 year old, no longer supported suite called Easy Media Creator 9 (aka EMC 9) and the current suite called Roxio Creator 2009. Please use the correct name when referring to the suite to avoid a lot of confusion

Then MyDVD is your Authoring tool where you make your DVD interface up and add your VW projects.
Look through all these How To’s to get a basic grasp and get some RW media to make little test projects while you learn.

Again, thanks for your help. I have another question. I made a couple of DVDs, using Creator 2009. When I try to play the DVD a strange screen first comes up with "Your Title Here" on it. I view this as an intro screen. It's no problem because there's a small square in the lower left of the screen and when I click on "Play" that square lights up and my DVD plays. So far so good. However this "intro screen" comes with its own heavy, portentous music that is very much out of key with my video(s). Is there a way to make a DVD that may include this necessary intro screen but without its accompanying music? T I A again.

Right click on the menu to change the audio or use the top menu to delete the music. You could also change it to something you like from your collection or from Smart Sound or you could make your own menu that will be on the screen as long as you want.
That little "block" is the menu link to your movie. You can add several titles (movies) to a menu so you can fill the DVD. Typically, the different menus give 4 to 6 tiles on the main menu page before it automatically creates a second menu page Fill for a DVD in this case is no more than one hour of best quality video per single sided disc. You can get more, up to about a little less than 2 hours at a much reduced quality.
BTW if you only have one movie, you do not need a menu at all. When you start a new project, select "DVD, no menu". The movie you create will start playing as soon as the DVD player reads it. Caution, it will repeat at the end so you'll have to stop it manually.
