Just purchaed Roxio 2009 and am trying it out.  When I try to preview a trial project made by inserting just one short video (captured from tv) and using the default menu that comes up, it hangs and just says "opening menu" forever.  If I switch to a differet menu, it opens in just a few seconds and begins previewing the video.  Is there something wrong with the default menu or some reason it would take 10, 20 or even more minutes to open the preview.  I don't want to keep the program if it is going to cause continual problems with freezing, slowness, etc.

You forgot to say what you inserted it to, but I would guess that it is MyDVD (Create DVD-Advanced).   Let us know what program you are using.

I inserted the video into MY DVD, which is the module that has the menu options.   I have installed the service pack...did it first thing.  I also have another serious problem with the video editing module.  The buttons that allow  you to set the start and end positions on a clip are greyed out and I cannot edit any of the video clips.  I have tried avi, mpg, clips previously imported and clips I imported using Roxio 2009.  Why would this occur and what can I do?

First in either VW or MyDVD go to Tools – Options – Render and set it to Software.

See how that works.

If things start to click, tell us what your video card is.

I wanted to let you know that I didn't realize you had to set start and end positions in a different window than the main window.  Because the buttons were there (though greyed out) I thought it was not functionig properly.  Why don't they leave out the buttons there if they aren't functional.

As far as the other problem, I will give the suggestion to set rendering to software a try.  But I would think hardward rendering would be faster.  And why would one menu not work and all the others I have tried work fine?  Doesn't seem to have anything to do with the rendering method.   Could the menu have been corrupted during installation?  Would there be a way to reinstall the menu without reinstalling the whole program?  Thankyou.

In which window are the "start and end" position greyed out? What is the main window you mentioned?

What are your system specs especially video card? If your video card/adaptor is not capable of handling the hardware method then the render might hang.
Which menu style is giving you the problem? You cannot simply "install menus".

Most of the buttons and menus are context sensitive. Meaning that they only work when you select the correct object.

First, the greyed out buttons are only in the main (first window) and I now realize that you do not do that type of editing in that window but in another window, which is working.  That was my error, but I think the design of the program could be improved to not have non-working buttons displayed.

I also found that the last time I opened My DVD, the menu I was talking about (it is the menu style that is automatically shown when the program opens) did finally open in the preview window and is now working correctly.  Perhaps setting to software rendering solved the problem.  Don't know what caused the issue, but at this point, most of my problems are not occuring...or were just a result of my not understanding the program.  My video card is an NVidea 7600GS with 256 MB dedicated memory and I usually have no problem renderig video with it.  I have the latest Direct X installed.  Thank you for your help!
