I am using Creator 2009 with Windows XP, SP3. I have been successfully capturing VHS tapes & DVDs using the DV capture setting. I just noticed the drop down for capture settings and am not clear when one of the other settings should be selected. I captured the same 1:09 hour VHS tape twice - once with the setting on DV (AVI file), the other with the setting on DVD HQ (MPEG file). I'm guessing that there is no difference in quality - that the DVD HQ file is simply compressed. I'm quite certain I wouldn't want to select any of the other settings but am not clear on which of these 2 settings should be selected Can someone tell me what is recommended and why? Thanks.

I have another question about burn time: When I burn a video to DVD, the burn is in real time and I can see the video playing. My brother has done a few burns and some were in real time but others went very fast (10 min. for a 1 hr. video) without being able to see the video playing. He cannot think of anything he did differently. I'm guessing that he selected DV for the capture that burned in real time and DVD HQ for the capture that burned quickly. Am I correct and, again, which is the best choice? Thanks.

You are using the best quality setting.  Don't change anything.  The .avi file is larger, but it is faster for editing, and the quality is better, in most cases.

As gpb indicates, the AVI capture produces the best quality overall.

Using mpeg isn’t too bad unless you re-render the original a couple of times. Then you will see loses as it is unpacked then repacked each time.

Your next question is confusing because you don’t speak the language…

You are not “burning”. What you see is a viewer of the Rendering process. When you see the puddle (my word), gray screen, you are seeing what Roxio calls “Smart Render”

That indicates that the Source clip is in proper format and is being copied to the temp file.

A good example is that the Menus will always be rendered because of the changes made as soon as you add a clip.

The clip may be compliant, so it Smart Renders

Then the end comes and (never watched too close) and I think it says it is Rendering the Menu again…

In any case you should get the idea.
