Go into Device Manager (Win-Pause | Hardware tab) and expand the DVD/CD-ROM drives section and check the Properties of both.
Do any errors show up there?

What did you find?
You have not ever mentioned any of your PC specs - like I have in my signature...
If you go into Windows Explorer and right click on these drives, select Properties. They should have a "Recording" tab.
Also use the Roxio Home program - Tools - Disc Info.
That will tell us the Make and Model of each drive as well as the Firmware.
Do you have any RW media you can use for testing?

Click on My Computer, then click on Control Panel, then on System, then on Hardware, then on Device Manager.

As for my pc specs, I'm running Windows home Vista, my processor is Intel® Core2 Quad CPU QPU @ 2.40GHz 2.40 GHz. Physical Memory (RAM) is 3.00 GB with a 32-bit Operating System. Memory Module is 512 MB DDR2-SCRAM (666 MHZ) My Grafics card is NVIDIA GeForce 8400 G-S. I'm not sure this is the info you wanted. I have no idea what all this means. LOL Everything has been updated to newest drivers and versions. After restore I guess I'll have to get them all over again. Thanks again, as soon as I get up and running again I'll post as to how all is going. Mary Lou

Mary Lou,
No you haven't, you never answered Jim's question about device manager and it showing a error.
It might of been fixed with a simple PXengine download but we will never know now.
Instead you contacted HP, you say HP's tech hosed your pc and now your imaging back to it's backup image...

Yep, and several days ago a PM to her gave her the same information. But she hasn't mentioned if she checked the device manager or not. ??

Ok guys I'm still backing up my computer. It is taking forever. I was doing some more reading. I went to Device Manger. I went to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. I clicked and opened it. There are 4 IDE chanels under it. No numbers or anything. Then there is Intel® ICH9 2 port Serial ATA Storage Controller 2 - 2926. Then, Intel® ICH9 4 port Serial ATA Storage Controller 1 - 2920. That is 6 all together. When I click on the first 2 and go to properties and Advanced settings there is nothing in Advanced Settings. When I click on the third one and go to Advanced Settings the top one is highlighted. Target Id is 0, Device Type is ATA Disk, Current Mode is Ultra DMA Mode 5. The second line not highlighted says the same thing as the first line. DMA is enabled. The 4th IDE Channel is the same as the 3rd one. The 5th and 6th ones (Intel) do not have Advanced Settings.
Anymore ideas so as I don't have to do a complete reinstall? LOL I know you guys are very computer savy. Mary Lou

You, more than likely wouldn't have had to send it anywhere, had you listened to ANY of the folks here, who tried to help you.

I don’t completely agree. She reformatted the PC and it didn’t work. Likewise, HP isn’t going to take it back if they don’t think all efforts are exhausted…
But I do agree, it appears she never bothered to answer any question that was put to her or follow any troubleshooting suggestion. That leaves a pretty bad taste in my mouth, and if she posts again I will have to weigh that before I waste any time…

Dear grandpabruce and Jim_Hardin
You say I never bothered to answer any questions that were put to me and I never followed through with any troubleshooting. THAT IS NOT TRUE! I answered on Aug. 30th and I believe before that. Let me say again that I tried everything you fellows suggested. Also let me say again that I don't profess to be very literate with the computer and it's workings like you fellows but I'm not a novice either. I have had computers since 1995 starting with Windows 95. I played with my computer for 10 months before getting on the internet. I felt it was important to learn about my computer first and how it worked. I started with an Aptiva which only had 1 gig of hard drive and then upgraded it to 2 gigs. I then went to an Aptiva which had 8 gig. Then I had a Dell 98, then a Dell ME, then a Dell XP and Dell XP laptop, then an HP Vista laptop and finialy an HP Vista desktop. I bought the HP desktop because I was pleased with my HP laptop. That being said, I bought the HP desktop in Jan. of 2008 and had nothing but trouble with it ever since I brought it home from Best Buy. 3 days after I set it up I had to take it back to Best Buy. This is the 2nd time I have had to send it back to HP to be fixed! I had to send it in July of 2008. I have never had to send any other computers I've owned back to be fixed for any reason. I think my computer is just a lemon and not very stable. Also let me say that the only reason I keep getting new computers is that I like to stay up with things. I give my old computers away when I buy new, either to my grandkids or friends. I only had one computer bite the dust and that was my Dell laptop. The mother board went on it. I'm sorry you fellows don't think I tried any of your advice but I did. I installed Roxie 2010 yesterday and it seems to be running very smoothly. I've done a couple of things on it and they came out great. Let me say again, thank you very much for the help you gave me before. Mary Lou
