Recording from microphone

I'm having a problem recording from microphone.  There is background noise even when microphone is turned off. Ruled out problem with mic. Any help would be appreciated.

Any help appreciated

Also after recording  and choosing either edit or create audio disc, program seems to freeze up

Are you using a laptop? They sometimes have built in microphones which would need to be disabled.
